OOOPS! Please disregard the previous half dozen, or so, posts.

Comic relief?
And now, back to our show...

I am still trying to figure out the POINT of cameras utilizing ISO 25,400 and above. What exactly could be a PRACTICAL purpose of it? The pics I have seen shot at those astronomical ISO settings were not worth the time or the pixels, every one has been terrible.
Sounds like it could be used in forensics or private "eyes" snooping on wayward husbands on a Saturday night with a overcast skies, new moon at midnight!
Or, possibly, to sell us multiple ND filters or better yet a ND512 filter. Of course you have to love the noise!
Have a good one. Ray

Sorry Steph!
Haha!! It's okay. I dont need up to 12 whatever.. but know my D3100 has Hi1, and Hi2, Although I rarely use them...there have been times they were necessary. A noisy photo is better than blurry :). As far as flash, I admittedly know nothing about external flashes. In the past 4 months i've been trying to learn as much as I can with the equipment I have, and because I don't do portraits or people that often, I'm not in any rush to jump into flash. I'm sure it will come someday...
Maybe the D90 is what i should be checking out then. I'd REALLY love the D7000 though, haha.
Maybe I'll do the 18 months no financing from Best Buy :)
I think you would be MUCH happier with the D7000 for around $300 more. It twice the camera of the D90.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do!

When you get interested in flash, go to Strobist:

I never had a D90, but the Difference between my D70 and D7000 is simply amazing.
Soon people will be throwing away D7000s as they all buy D800s. I almost Did, but then I came to my Denses.

Sounds like the pixel wars have become ISO wars.
The manufacturers ran out of pixels to add.

Attention "people" ... Throw your "Precious" D7000's away in this direction, I will gladly take care of them for you, at no fee whatsoever!
ahh! Digital kool-aid, doesn't it taste " grand " ?
More sugar please! ;-)

I am getting so sick of being limited to "AF-S" for autofocus with my D3100. There are so many cheaper options that are older models of just "AF"
I really am considering giving the D3100 a boot in exchange for an upgrade. Any recommendations on a DSLR with interal focus motor.. I'm not sure I can afford the D7000 at this point..
Back to the OP, here's an idea. You should be able to get a D200 for around $450 on craiglslist or less. Not cheap at all, just inexpensive.

I still use mine! Great camera, solid build.

the D90 in low light kind of worries me with ISO only up to 6400... how does yours perform in low light?
I've never set my D90's ISO above 800. With an f/2.8 lens, I've never had to.

To get around the fact that some don't like, or more likely, don't know how to use flash or other light.
Or take pictures in low light where flash isn't allowed or not sensible; e.g. thieves in the night.
right now im playing with indoor basketball...gyms lights differ greatly...i shoot 18-55 or 55=200...i set iso 800 to 3200...shutter 500...and use ev...pictures are not pro...but they are more than useable...i have d3000...
dont dump your current camera...use as backup or for "special"
projects...ei macro or portrait...
