I am getting so sick of being limited to "AF-S" for autofocus with my D3100. There are so many cheaper options that are older models of just "AF"

I really am considering giving the D3100 a boot in exchange for an upgrade. Any recommendations on a DSLR with interal focus motor.. I'm not sure I can afford the D7000 at this point..
I guess the part that I'm confused about is what lens do you want to get that you can't use on your D3100?? Most manufactures including Nikon make a multitude of AF-S lens that cover all ranges. I have 2 D3100s and have lens from 18mm up to 400mm. Don't get rid of you're D3100 because they won't give you diddly on a trade and the reason I have a 2nd one is because I bought it refurbished for $250 (body only).......

Cheap ones like the 50mm 1.8 AF for 80-120$ as opposed to 220 brand new for the AF-S one..

There just seems to be a multitude of cheap AF used lenses..

I can only speak to the 50mm 1.8 as I had the "cheap" one and it was exactly that. It was more like something out of a crackerjack box than a quality lens. I see what you're saying and I'm not one to have a multitude of lens because I just don't see the necessity of spending $$$ when I can have what I need in 3-4 lens. I see folks on here and for some reason they seem to be Canon users that list their lens and they overlap. I myself would have a sale if I had 8-10 lens. Look at what you need and try and downsize rather than spending good money on lens that you use sparingly. I can't understand why someone (not you) would want lens of the same speed that overlap. Sorry about my rant but their are better things to spend $$$ on than a stockpile of glass.........

That's fair - Right now the lenses listed below in my sig, and then some others that i got cheap (Under 30 each) to experiment and collect.

I bought a 43-86mm f/3.5 lens for $20.. mainly for the 3.5 stop at 86mm and portraits..

I dont' want any overlapping..

I also want the Tokina 11-16mm with doesn't AF on the D3100 either.. haha

Is that strictly a manual focus lens? Wont matter what body you put that on....

I like my D7000

Yes it is, I know that. I was just talking about overlap. I know this won't auto on anything.

If you can get that Tokina at a decent price I'd grab it. I'm assuming you'd be using it for landscapes, possilbe on a tripod so you could manually focus. AF is nice but us old goats remember when there was no such thing and we took good photos back in the "Olden Days". Just kidding but don't discount manual focus lens especially if on a limited budget. Just remember that these lens will work on that camera you buy in the future so if you can get a bargin go for it.........

mt. how dose the d90 compare to the d7000 for vidoes

The D90 is lower resolution video than the D7000. (720P compared to 1080P) and the D90 is limited to 5 minutes of video before it needs to stop and cool the processor. The D7000 will do 20 minutes at a time.

Its not junk, its Nikons introductory level DSLR and is designed to get you started in digital SLR photography inexpensively. (Althoungh Nikon has really upped the ante with the D3200 at only $50 more!) You will inevitably realize its shortcomings and want to upgrade, but hopefully by that time you are aware of the features you really want and will keep the D3100 as a back-up body. There is nothing wrong with the D3100 at all, it is just short on more professional features is all.

Then get the credit card out and go spend $3000 for the 800. Within 3 months or possibly already there will be glitches in that camera also. It's almost beginning to be a trademark with new releases as I read through the multitude of problems that folks have with their cameras and software. New is not always better but when people keep forking out $$$ everytime a new one comes out Nikon/ Canon/ Sony/Pentax will just keep pushing them at the public..........
