That's my issue, I can only use the af-s ones if I want auto focus and that's not nearly 76

I don't think its the camera. I love my d3100 optically, I just am starting to see its shortcomings. It's not junk at all and I've read its better than the 3200 a few places

Then get the credit card out and go spend $3000 for the 800. Within 3 months or possibly already there will be glitches in that camera also. It's almost beginning to be a trademark with new releases as I read through the multitude of problems that folks have with their cameras and software. New is not always better but when people keep forking out $$$ everytime a new one comes out Nikon/ Canon/ Sony/Pentax will just keep pushing them at the public..........

Pay me $20 and I'll dispose of it for you in an environmentally responsible manor :)

I have a D3000 along with my D7000 and use them both regularly. Do you drive a Mercedes? Anything else could be thought of as junk... I drive a Ford Focus, I'm happy with it, it does what it's supposed to do. My D7000 could be thought of as junk compared to many full frame cameras. The full frame cameras are thought of as junk when compared to a large format camera.

the grass is always greener - enjoy your 3100, it's a great camera. What you do with what you have is far more important than what you have.

I can relate. I bought the Nikon D5000 and 3 months later they came out with the D7000. Well I bought the D7000 and have never looked back. In fact I just bought the Nikon AF 300mm prime lens because I have the Focusing motor in camera. I bought used and still saved $400 over the AF-S Lens. Get the D7000 and you will be more than happy. And the Tokina 11-16mm works great with the camera also. PS I still have the D5000 for back-up and use it for kids and family portraits.

Well,..it's time for me to "chime" in. Anyone who thinks the D3100 is junk obviously doesn't know how to make it produce....Period!

I've had the "junker" for a year and a half now. With the advice of a few of the very knowledgeable Nikon shooters here and reading some books, I get crystal-clear images in manual and the auto modes. As far as AF-S lenses, "How many do you need?" Nikon makes a nice assortment of quality lenses that will produce great images. Inferior glass on a "million-dollar" camera will still give you crappy images.

That said, I'd like to have the faster Ferrari or Lamborghini, but realistically I proudly drive a GMC.

I just change the oil and do basic maintenance. It's still on warranty, Goofie.

I am getting so sick of being limited to "AF-S" for autofocus with my D3100. There are so many cheaper options that are older models of just "AF"

I really am considering giving the D3100 a boot in exchange for an upgrade. Any recommendations on a DSLR with interal focus motor.. I'm not sure I can afford the D7000 at this point..
I guess the part that I'm confused about is what lens do you want to get that you can't use on your D3100?? Most manufactures including Nikon make a multitude of AF-S lens that cover all ranges. I have 2 D3100s and have lens from 18mm up to 400mm. Don't get rid of you're D3100 because they won't give you diddly on a trade and the reason I have a 2nd one is because I bought it refurbished for $250 (body only).......

Cheap ones like the 50mm 1.8 AF for 80-120$ as opposed to 220 brand new for the AF-S one..

There just seems to be a multitude of cheap AF used lenses..

I can only speak to the 50mm 1.8 as I had the "cheap" one and it was exactly that. It was more like something out of a crackerjack box than a quality lens. I see what you're saying and I'm not one to have a multitude of lens because I just don't see the necessity of spending $$$ when I can have what I need in 3-4 lens. I see folks on here and for some reason they seem to be Canon users that list their lens and they overlap. I myself would have a sale if I had 8-10 lens. Look at what you need and try and downsize rather than spending good money on lens that you use sparingly. I can't understand why someone (not you) would want lens of the same speed that overlap. Sorry about my rant but their are better things to spend $$$ on than a stockpile of glass.........

Don't disagree about overlap and hoarding, but the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 is out of a CJ box? C'mon man!

Stef I did exactly what you're contemplating and for many of the same reasons. I had a D40 and wanted more so purchased a refurbed D90 right before the tsunami/flood Nikon experienced so I got it at $200 less than its going for now. You wouldn't go wrong with a D90 and you could find one used, but you'd have more growing room with the D7000.

I've picked up a bunch of AF glass at great prices and with two bodies I can spread them out.

NikonRumors announced that D5200 may will come this summer. If D5200 is high rate than Canon, I will consider to upgrade to d5200 from my canon. I have been Canon lover for over 35 years. I can be patient to wait for it than having regret for rush buying T3i.

I am still trying to figure out the POINT of cameras utilizing ISO 25,400 and above. What exactly could be a PRACTICAL purpose of it? The pics I have seen shot at those astronomical ISO settings were not worth the time or the pixels, every one has been terrible.

To get around the fact that some don't like, or more likely, don't know how to use flash or other light.

And here I thought one should always educate themselves about a process before looking for less precise alternatives. Silly me!

Why learn something if you can spend more money?
Your ARE silly! :!:

I'm sure there is some use for it, besides being a money-maker for manufacturers.

OH YEAH!
What was I thinking???
quote=GoofyNewfie quote=MT Shooter quote=GoofyN... (show quote)

MT, I've seen some shot's that looked great. Now what I DON'T know is how much PP went into the pic to make it look great. That said, there is still a use for it. There are going to be times when if you can't push the ISO that high, you have no shot instead of a mediocre shot that you may be able to save in PP. Or you could be in a situation where one needs to be able to get a picture no matter if it's grainy, and flash isn't an option (think detective work). So I think there is a use for it, just not a general use for most people.
