Sounds like there were some Indians around. How long ago was the trip out west, if that was Route 17, its now Interstate 17 and you just can't pull over anymore. 75 Mph. and just enough emergency brake down lane. Then a animal control fence - barbed wire to keep the wild life and free range Live stock on the other side.

Long time.

Interesting that they turned that into an interstate. I remember it being a 2 lane road the wound through the mountains on the climb up to the higher elevations.

It's still a climb and it' still two lane, only two lines heading north and two heading south.

No, it's not an interstate. I17 goes from Phoenix to Flagstaff, but not through Sedona. You're talking about Rt 89A, a two-lane which goes from Sedona, up through Oak Creek Canyon past Slide Rock, and continues to Flagstaff.
Incidentally, the West Fork of Oak Creek is along this route, and well worth the stop and short hike. It was mentioned before, but kind of buried in 1000 other things to see.

If you hike, there are many choices right out of Sedona. I did the Soldier Pass Trail, which can be made into a nice loop. Fab scenery.

Do you know the name of that area where the river water slide it. Now that you mention it, it is probably 17. It has been a few years. We used to go to Az all the time. Love it there.

Highway 89A goes through Oak Creek Canyon north of Sedona. This is the road to "Slide Rock" a state park where the creek is funneled through a narrow "slide" that you can go on for about 40 feet I believe. There is a sign designating it and if you miss it just look for the 20 million cars parked along the road.
I 17 was built in the late 60's and I still remember the blasting they did was heard at our place in the canyon. Prior to the construction 89A was the only direct route from Sedona to Flagstaff and prior to it you had to go through Prescott.

The Grand Canyon is a great day trip from Sedona. We took a tour and it was well worth it. Didn't have to drive and the guide new all the right places to stop.

I'm planning on spending several weeks traveling through Arizona in an RV in February so all of the above comments are very helpful to me since I haven't yet started to outline a tour route. So Sedona area will definitely be on the list. Especially the Green Arches. I have been to the Grand Canyon so I agree that it is always a great stop but I was on the north rim so I'm looking forward to exploring other parts on Arizona even if political views in Arizona are a little bizarre, in my opinion. Do I need a gun in addition to my camera?

I always carried one. The illegals are pretty brazen now there. I had 3 try to borrow my camera and lenses until I explained with my 45 auto that I was not in the lending business.
Just be aware of your surroundings.

If you have additional questions as to what where and when PM me as I grew up in AZ and then when retired from the Army spent 15 years there in school and internship and work before moving and took my Jeep to nearly every corner of the state.
By the way in Winslow, AZ stay at the Posada Hotel. It is an old Harvey Train Station that is like an old Spanish Hacienda. Beautiful and relaxing. A long covered veranda with seats faces the tracks and frequently you have groups stay there with the sole purpose of photographing the trains during the day and night. No better place to stay.
Also stop by the new High School. I designed it.

Sorry but you might have a hard time finding Reid in Searchlight since he now resides in Vegas and has done so for many years. I lived in Vegas for 20 years and one was hard pressed to go to Searchlight. And BTW I never voted for Reid once, so I personally would not want to look him up.

Both places are exceptional. Oak Creek Canyon is a real treat from the Desert and it make one wonder how it ever got there. Be sure and visit. If you do not swim the water slide on Slick Rock can still fun to watch.

For personal pleasure: Telequepaque 'shopping center' is nice place to have lunch and walk about galleries and shops. Pardon my spelling, pronounce Telegepackge

Red Rock Crossing. The Stupa near Coffee Pot Rock. The drive into Tonto Bridge State Park is a thrill of the scary kind. And lovely after you get there. For Rent By Owner lodging worked out well for us in Sedona. We got a secluded house that seemed miles from the chaos in town.
