I fly every day for work and want something to slip in the flight bag. The Leica M9 is the dream..but that is all it will ever be. Just bought the EOS 5DIII and a rack of L series lenses, so no more big spends!!
I do sometimes take the 5DII , but can't carry it and lenses in the cockpit.

So here is what I want:

Small compact..

RAW images

Full manual control
AV
Tv
Bulb
Tripod fitting
Remote (both wired and wireless nice). ( so I can use Intervalometer)

Fixed 'built in zoom' or Lens system.
Canon EOS M mirror-less would be too big.

Living on a small island ( Jersey) I have one store I can look in and they have a small range of cameras to look at.

Online research can play a part but just not as useful as searching in shop.

I just purchased a canon G15 to supplement my 7D. I believe the G15 will satisfy most of your requirements. It will fit in a pocket and has a lot of features found on the normal SLR. Raw images and low light capability was a high priority for me but the highest priority was a view finder. I am too old school to search around in live view looking for a good composition. Plus not steady enough to hold the camera with out stretched arms. The Nikon 770 was a strong contender also but does not have a view finder. One draw back with the G15 is CS5 does not process it's raw images I had to upgrade to CS6 for that feature. I expect to practice with my new G15 this weekend and will advise you on my hands on results. Having a camera that can be pocket carried will give me many more photo ops.

Hi,
I've used a Lumix for years and just switch to a Sony NEX7. Either fits in the flight bag nicely.

I've of course noticed the difference in the quality of my photo due to the NEX tech specs, sensor size, etc. however over the years have captured some great sights with my Lumix.

If you can swing the Song RX, that would be a sweet package.

Mike

Still no remote or Bulb features, which is quite high on what I want.
As I said, earlier..getting a bit disheartened ..maybe that is a bit strong a word to use..fed up..sounds too negative.

If there is not what I want, all in one, camera then I can wait, no point in buying yet another device that is a compromise.

I'll keep searching though

That seems to tick all the boxes apart from bulb, and some that i have seen have a bulb option at the end of the manual exposure scale. But if the remote is wired, then the remote can probably handle that.

So it all depends on what the remote can do and it you can use the remote to give long time exposures.

Slow frame rate, compared to some of these cameras, seen one..the Sony? that does up to 10fps..not that I need that though

Little bigger than shirt pocket but great camera Canon G15 and or G12 if you can find one. I have G12 and it is my go anyplace camera. 28 to 140 equivalent to 35. Many features bigger cameras have. Raw and Raw plus JPeg, video. Compact but not a shirt pocket camera. Hope this helps.

In common with many, it does not have a wired remote option
Only one I have seen so far is a Nikon CoolPix P7700

Hi Neil

Yes you can use the Canon G15 in a shirt pocket you have use the right shirt, I use and like very much the shirts I get from Bass Pro Shop nice and large plus the other thing I like about those shirts is most are SPF rated and good for sun blocking and one more they also have an air vent in the back part keeps you cooler in the sun. But most of all you have to decide which camera you want. Enough said!

Here is a link to the Nikon 1 V1. It's the top of the line in that series. I believe it will do what you want. Although small, it is an interchangeable lens camera. It shoots in RAW and manual as well. Read the technical specs.

That does look good, will have to see if I can find one next time I go to England.
Only reservation, is the interchangable lens system, and my own ability to then start buying more lenses, and then having to carry them, sort of the defeats getting a small form factor camera.
