Yes, it happened to me, but unexpectedly it worked out OK. My wife uses a Sony Camcorder, it has some built-in memory! I did not know that, and 'stumbled' across that while checking her camera... Videos were of a winter driving trip to Alaska.
My dogs know that word now...I say...no card...they turn around.
Always have that setting on. If you don’t you’ll eventually fill an empty card with your best non photos 😀
What's happening people, didn't you always tell your children to PUT IT BACK WHERE YOU FOUND IT?
I leave a spare SD card in my car; all I'll have to do is remember where I put it when I need it.

What if you take your wife's car for the outing?
I carry a couple of spares in my wallet. Wherever I go my wallet goes with me. And I never go out shooting without a spare battery and a lens cloth in my pocket.
Ihave not only done that, but also shown up without a battery.

cards are cheap, carry the in every vehicle; only problem is finding them in all the mess.
I have extra cards and battery in my camera bag. I have Nikon D7200 with two cards. I think I am OK?
