Hi all,
Taking a long overdue trip back to see family & friends in Europe and was planning on taking only my Tamron 18-270 on my D7200. I have a number of other non-zoom lenses but I thought I could get away with this one. Using it for both family photos and for the usual tourist shots..
Was also thinking I really don't need to bring my SB-700 since you can't use flash in most places. If I do need a flash I can get away with the built-in. Trying to keep the weight down but don't want to nit be able to get important keepsakes.
Thoughts?

I would think that would work well for you.

(I take my 18-200 everywhere, on one camera.)

Thanks for the confirmation. Some of my friends suggested I get an 18-400 but really didn't think it would be that much better. Plus the trade-in on my lens would still have me having to spend ~$500 to upgrade.

If one lens, that is what I would take.

That would be a great lens for an all in one solution. I have it on a 70D and almost never take it off.

That's probably because that's what they would want to have.

Ya gotta figure what is important to you.

(Yea, 12mm would be handy, sometimes;
400 would be handy, sometimes;
(I don't shoot animals at 100 yards though.)
My 18-200 is handy (for me) 98% of the time.)

In ye olden days (≈1975), kinda before zooms were popular and inexpensive, I had a 28; 35; 50; 135; & 200.
Now I just use my 50 & 18-200. That's it - works for me now.

In my D7100 days, I traveled with the 18-140 mm lens, which is reasonably small and light-weight. I found 140mm (210mm full-frame-equivalent) long enough for just about all travel situations. However, I found that 18 mm (27 mm full-frame equivalent) was not wide enough for certain landscape and city shots. So I added a Sigma 10-20mm to my kit, which worked out well for me. If anything, I would take a wider lens.

These days, my favorite travel lens is the full-frame Sony 24-105mm. I find this range perfect for travel.

Several years ago I bought the Tamron 18-270 lens for my DSLR system. I like it so much as a go to lens that I never take it off my D3100 body despite having several Nikon mount lenses both Nikon and Tamron that I could use, I probably should sell those other lenses that just sit here. 12-24,200-400,35-55,70-300,50 MM 1.8 28-105 etc..

That lens will perform well. It would be great if you could include a light tripod in your kit.

You can get away with that lens. Quite right about flashes. I only have two lenses, the second a 50mm,1.4 for low light or no flash. Worked fine. No regrets.

I have noticed that some of the forum members have suggested that you take a wide angle zoom. Not a bad idea but, are you indeed a wide angle shooter? If you are not not only you have to buy a new lens but also you have to learn how to use it. I bet your present lens will be used more often in its mid range of focal lengths.

18mm will give you an equivalent view of a 27mm lens. I have a Nikon 12-24 f4 and I find that I do not use it that often in my travels although I have used it with my D610 from 18-24mm with excellent results. I thought of buying the Nikon 16-35 f4 but since I hardly use the 12-24 I gave it a second thought realizing I will not use it that much either. If I ever need it I will rent it.

I am sure the 18-270 will serve you well. If you also own a prime like a 35mm f1.8 I would take it too. It could be most useful at night and for shots in low light like inside buildings.

I took my 18-200 on my d7000. Could have used my 50mm f1.4 for some of the cathedral interiors, but it worked out fine. With the ability to do noise reduction with Topaz or ON1, you should be fine.

Almost perfect but I would throw in a wide angle like the 12/24dx. Just minutes ago, on vacation in the Netherlands, my 18-300 was not wide enough. The 12-24 saved the day.

18-270 sounds fine. I'd have been fine with my 24-120 on my D750, if I was going. (No need for taking a second, wider lens. Just do a pan & stitch for the two occasions you might need wider.)
