I have a D7500. I travel with a Sigma 18-300. For a flash, if I take one at all, I use an SB-400, which is light and more versatile and effective than the pop-up. I don't think it is made anymore, but can probably be bought for a song, used.

Hi all,
Taking a long overdue trip back to see family & friends in Europe and was planning on taking only my Tamron 18-270 on my D7200. I have a number of other non-zoom lenses but I thought I could get away with this one. Using it for both family photos and for the usual tourist shots..
Was also thinking I really don't need to bring my SB-700 since you can't use flash in most places. If I do need a flash I can get away with the built-in. Trying to keep the weight down but don't want to nit be able to get important keepsakes.
Thoughts?

In my opinion, the only camera I take with me anymore on vacation is the Sony HX99, it has a Zeiss T* 24-720mm lens, built in flash with auto fill flash, shoots RAW, has a pop up viewfinder for daylight, the rear screen rotates up so you can shoot at a very low angle, and it all fits into a belt pouch that allows me to be HANDS FREE.
Trust me, you need this camera for travel, leave all that other stuff AT HOME and ENJOY yourself on vacation in Europe.

Keeping weight down, you have a good combination. The 3.5\6.3 lens (I do not own one but did look it up) should be a good match for the D7200 with one caveat. The Nikon 7000 family is not a good low light camera. Consider capping your auto ISO to 3200 and post process out any noise. The 7200 "fill" flash should save you from having to carry an extra flash.

What you have will be OK. But for that expensive of a trip, I would want to have a back-up - a very small easy to carry back up - like the Sony RX100 VI or VII used.
You do NOT want a bigger/heavier 18-400 !

Great travel lens, and the suggestion of the Sigma 10-24 is a good one, as this is my travel outfit which has served me well on seven continents. One word of caution about the in-camera flash on the 18-270 lens in that the lens will cast a shadow on the bottom of the image.

My Nikkor 18-300 lives on my d7200. Great travel and all round lens. Last year I bought a d500 and my Tamron 18-400 lives on it. Love that combo.

Hardly ever use any other lens on my cameras.

Likewise. I took D750 with 24-120mm lens. However I carried old Nikon 20mm 2.8 for interior shots. Really does not need wide angle zoom. For discretion I have my backup Sony RX100 VI

In my trips to Europe, I found my 18-105 mm lens on my D7100 covered all but one or two shots on a 3 week trip. Things are packed pretty tightly together, so if you did use a wide-angle lens, you'd have distortion to handle. I found that indoors (churches, castles, taverns, etc.) I could do just fine with a higher ISO and wide aperture. I rarely needed any flash. Since you have the 18-270 mm lens, I see no need to spend any money. If I was going to spend any, it would be on the 16-80 mm f/2.8-4 lens. I have that now, and I would take that and my 70-300 mm lens if I go overseas again.
Enjoy the trip.

For a DX Nikon, my travel lens would be the 16-85mm. That is 24-128mm in FX equivalent. I would sacrifice extra reach for the smaller size and lighter weight.

I think that this is good advice. This is the kind of range you want for travel--120mm full-frame equivalent really is long enough for most travel purposes--except for wildlife shots. 24mm at the wide end works as well. The super-zooms, like the 18-270m, tend to fall off in quality and also tend to be larger and heavier. Any lens that has 10x or more magnification has to cut corners somewhere. As always, lens choices are full of compromises.

For another take on lenses for travel cameras, see "Mistakes People Make When Taking Cameras on Cruises (https://www.travelresearchonline.com/blog/index.php/2022/10/mistakes-people-make-when-taking-cameras-on-cruises/). Telephoto lenses, particularly telephoto zooms, are over-rated as a travel lens. They are heavy, slow, usually optically inferior to fixed-length lenses, and may subject shooters to unwelcome attention. I recommend, along with many others, a very fast lens of your favorite length (e.g., a Sigma 56mm f1.4 in a Fujifilm X-mount) and a light-weight wide/normal zoom (e.g., a Fujinon XC 15-45mm, f3.5-5.6) when your favored lens is too long. By cropping the 56mm (equivalent to an 85mm lens on my Fuji X-S10) and enlarging one-quarter of the image, it becomes a 340mm lens. Using this technique, I've produced beautiful 16x20 and 20x30-inch enlargements that look like they were taken with a full-frame camera. Even better, these lenses weigh 10 and 5 ounces and cost under $800 for the pair. If you're going on a safari where you NEED a long telephoto, rent it and have the guides carry it for you, just as they would if you were shooting with a rifle. And if you need a backup camera, that's what your iPhone or Galaxy is for!

I have the Sigma 18-300 on my DSLR and it almost never comes off. I had it on a cruise just before the pandemic and was more than satisfied. I did, however, also carry a pocketable camera for off ship excursions. I suggest the Sony RX100 or Lumix ZS200 for when you don't want to lug the bigger camera around. If you can live with a 1/2.3" sensor, I suggest the Lumix DCZS80 or Sony HX99.

Four years ago I traveled for a month through the Europe, 12 countries in total. I had one full frame body an two FF zooms - 28-105 and 20-35. Never had a need to zoom above 105mm and below 20mm.
You made a right choice, it will work well for you.
