Aialik Glacier extends 4-mi. from Harding Icefield to Aialik Bay. Its the largest tidewater glacier of Kenai Fjords National Park. A tidewater glacier terminates at sea level and calves directly into the sea. The translation for Aialik means "eerie" or "dangerous."
The day was misty and the clouds hung very low. The Captain of the Kenai Star maneuvered the boat close to the mile wide, 300-ft. high glacier and circled a safe distance back and forth several times so that everyone aboard could get a good view of the ice. There was no spectacular calving happening when we were there, only some thin ice falls that looked like waterfalls.
I took these pics with a Canon Digital Rebel XT w/EF 17-85mm lens. PP w/PSE8. With the exception of the cropped "pseudo pano" pics, all are full frame at various FL. The last 2 pics were taken by my grand-daughter and daughter.
I hope you like these. Comment if you wish.

Thank you and thanks for looking. It was at the beginning of Aug. and they had their worst year for rain. As a result, it was raining most of the time we were out on the water but you can see from the pic of the wife and me, we were prepared. At least it changed to misty when we got to the glacier.
OMG. Awesome. As if I didn't already have an overwhelming urge to get to Alaska, along come your pictures to really drive me crazy. So beautiful. I can't wait to get there some time.

Thank you. I don't mean to drive anyone crazy but you might as well join the rest of us who are crazy about Alaska. Yes, its beautiful. Don't wait too long to go there. You're closer to AK than I am. I'm glad you like the pics. I have more to show. Keep watching. Thanks for looking. :)
Very nice photos Gene. I'd suggest you keep them handy as with the global warming effect, the glaciers may not be around much longer. The picture of you and your wife is very good with the background that you had. Nice looking piece of equipment you have in your hands too. What lens was that?

Hi, Preston. Glad you like the pics. I intend to keep these pics, and other glacier pics I have, and preserve them somehow. After I finished PP these, I Googled to see how much this glacier has melted since being discovered by the Russians. I was astonished!
My daughter took that one of the wife and me with my Canon Powershot S3 IS. She's a good photographer. I spent almost all of the 6+ hr. trip on that deck, with the exception of eating dinner in the cabin.
The equipment you see in my hand is a Canon XSi with an EF 100-400mm L lens. You can't see my Rebel XT, which I shot the glacier pics with, because its under my jacket. I also kept my S3 IS in a belt holster. The rest of my gear was in my backpack inside the cabin. I didn't mind bringing it all with me because I wasn't going too far, being restricted to the confines of the boat. It would've been a big loss if we sunk. :)
There's another glacier set coming. Thanks for looking.
I've got a S3 also with a Rebel XTi - Tuesday picked up the SX40 and in a learning curve with it - like it so far. Tomorrow going out and see what it'll really do in those looonnngggg distant digital shots - got my tripod all ready to go to!! hahaha Reason I wanted it was the zoom distant factor. I've seen photos taken in the 1 1/2 to 2 mile range and they were good. Thinking of taking it back and swapping it for the SX50 cause of the remote factor - SX40 doesn't have the remote hookup - SX50 does. See how I do tomorrow.
Looking forward to seeing your next glacier set. Thanks for posting these.

Good Luck with that 40, Preston. Take it back. I like the idea of the remote on the 50 and I'm sure you'll appreciate that feature. Working on the glaciers.
