I just sent in two lenses to Adorama to be evaluated and they just got back to me. I sent in a tamron 18-200 and tamron 18-270, both practically brand new, barely used (under a year old), because I thought the pictures were a little too blurry for me, Ive never had a lens that I couldnt get at least one picture of a bird in flight that was good. These lenses didnt cut it. Adoram offers me 290.00 for the 18-270 and 40.00 for the 18-200!! Your opinions greatly appreciated. Ive never done this before, but I think theses are just a tad '?' low??

Everyone has to make a profit to stay in business. The prices do seem a tad low though. Have you put them on the 'For Sale' here on UHH?

You might do better on eBay. Ask Adorama to send them back. You now know where to set your minimum bid.

If they don't sell there you can try again or someone else; e.g. KEH.

the 18-200 sells for 299.00, ask 150 to 175.00ish. the 18-270 sells in the mid 600 range, ask 400ish. if they pay 290 it may sell for 400 to 450.00? very much up & down the scale in values. are these lenses soft at max extension?

I hope you don't mind me saying so, but you are not being 'ripped off' if you agree to the sale - and if you are unhappy with the amount offered drop me an email with your quote number and I'll get them returned at our expense (fully insured), immediately.

We always aim to offer 70% of our expected re-sale value, but the selling prices on our website can only be a ROUGH guide if you are using this to try and figure out how much we might be able to pay you for your gear.

When new models are released, the overall market tends to soften. Most pre-owned units will usually drop in value, but we will still be looking to sell our existing pre-owned stock (which may have been warehoused and therefore costing us revenue for days, weeks or months) without making too great a loss on the price we originally paid.

In my experience, while you will be offered 70% of the current expected selling price (we need to cover shipping, insurance, staffing, advertising, warehousing costs AND the boss expects us to turn a profit), unless you are selling a genuine collectors' piece you shouldn't expect to receive more than 55-65% of the price you see on our website (which doesn’t means that you won’t!)

br3kes, if they are blurry and don't cut it, I'd be to ashamed and guilty to sell them to anybody, at any price !?
What will you tell someone if they ask why you are selling them? No wonder you don't want to sell them yourself. Send them back to the manufacturer and demand a refund if they are almost new.

Once again...thank you all for your advice. I just thought that 40.00 for an 18-200 was pretty much giving it away. At the extended length is where they are blurry, but they take nice close pictures. Lesson learned, I should have stuck with the nikon lense! Thanks again!

Hi,
Just a thought. Some cameras have an adjustment for their AF settings which can be setup for each indicidual lens by photographing something like the Spyder Lenscal. (look it up) I have a Nikon 18-200 which wasn't focusing well so I used that and it is now fine. As both lenses are not good, could it be the camera?

Regards

Gerry

If they are under a year old why wouldn't you send them back to Tamron and have them looked at.

I purchased an 18 - 250 and never had those problems with the lens. Tamrom is a reliable company and I am sure they would want to correct a possible manufacturing problrm for you unless you are just trying to unload the lenses.

It could be that all you need is to send the lenses and body together to Tamron to be calibrated.

Could it be that the shutter speed was too slow for the focal length?...Were the shots taken while the camera was on a tripod?...Need to narrow down the list of possible causes before assuming it's the lens's fault...

How long did it take for you to get a response? I sent camera, etc. to Adorama about 2 weeks ago and still have heard nothing.

I've traded with adaroma before they are horrible to do business with. That's just been my dealing with them. They take sooo long to get back to you. I had to talk to several managers to get things done . B&H is better for me. That's just my experience with them trading . However they sell excellent product ,

I've had limited dealings with them but have no complaints...Last transaction was that I bought a new/old stock lens from their eBay store....Came as described...
