Besides me?

I had a couple Nikon SLRs that went away when film (mostly) died.

I did not embrace digital but shot family events and some travel snapshots with a Canon Elph and Nikon Coolpix.

When I decided to up the quality, I got an RX100 because the sensor was so much bigger.

After that, I got three different Panasonic M4/3 cameras.

I have no idea what I'm missing by not having a "real" DSLR!

What reasons are there that I should get one.

For me it is mostly the ability to create striking images. Changing focal lengths for different looks. Using Picture Controls to get different looks like I did in the film days. I don't want to just "record" what I saw. From the beginning, I have wanted to capture what I felt about what I saw. DSLRs do that for me.

Ha ha ha good for you. The only reason I still have a FF DSLR is I also have an SLR (actually 2) and I still shoot film. So a FF DSLR body makes sense.

But more and more when I shoot digital, I am shooting with my Olympus M43 camera. It is my go-to everyday carry around camera, adventure and travel camera. I could see having M43 and Medium format digital kits in the future, (when medium format comes down in price, as it will).

Now that Olympus is making pro lenses for M43 I cannot think of a reason you should get a DSLR. But I'll loan you A DSLR if you want to try it. Ok wait... Battery life. DSLR battery life is superior to mirrorless. But you can carry 5 extra batteries and the M43 camera and extra batteries are STILL smaller and lighter by 50% than the equivalent DSLR.

Beware you have started a firestorm. Heated opinions will soon follow!!

I treated myself to first DSLR for my birthday in January (at my age you can buy your own presents) but been in serious photography for 50+ yrs (had a side business, specializing in weddings for years) from film SLRs thru current high end P&S "bridge" cameras until the DSLR. (Reason I started following UHH in fall, joined in Feb)

Quick things I like about it is obviously the quality of the glass, higher MPs, the superb sensor system, inter-changeable lens, RAW ability, and just more control. What I don't like is cost of accumulating camera & lens, gadgets, etc - becomes more ego-driven vs pratical - the weight of carrying all and the learning curve. Six months later and heavy study of a 365-page manual, I still disappoint myself often. Taking many more shots and more time to get what I want. Although I felt it was the next step - gotta stay fluid or you become gel - some days not convinced it was worth it, especially if I miss a shot I would have captured with my Sony DSCs.

You get all those things you mention with a high quality mirrorless camera. And smaller size, mass and cost.

As a longtime SLR user, Canon user, and happy DSLR user, I am absolutely committed to the concept that Interchangeable Lens Cameras (ILC) are at the apex of camera technology for general use. Whether mirrorless or mirrored has no real effect, it's just a personal or system level preference, depending upon many different factors, just as camera brand choice is.

The short answer to your question "What reasons are there that I should get one -a real DSLR?" is that there are many reasons, but quite possibly none that are relevant to you or to many other people.

If you don't already have existing lenses, I suggest there is no reason today to buy a DSLR. Even Canikon has said the heyday of the DSLR is past. After all D-SLRs are digital SLRs. There is a new kid on the block. A new format without that silly reflex mirror flipping around stirring up dust and throwing oil on the sensor. ;) DSLRs will be around for a while yet, but mirrorless is the future.

I purchased a DSLR because I was so used to the versatility of an SLR for so many years.
(I stared digital with a Sony Mavica and then an H1. Had to get a DSLR because I'm so used to the feel.)

I thought of another reason to buy a dSLR. Because you like to have to clean your sensor regularly. My cameras require much much much less sensor maintanence than my DSLRs.

Now you tell me!!! (lol) I truly get it JD. (Also why I never mentioned what brand or model I own)

Cameras are like cars - buy a BMW and people will state you can get the same features in a Lexus for less cost. Buy a Lexus and you are told the quality of features in a BMW are better.

If there was one perfect car, camera, whatever, we all would have only one brand & one model.

Bill, you should know better. It’s not possible to be a serious photographer and not shoot with a dslr !!
4:3’s are like minibikes compared to real motorcycles! Ever seen a Hells Angle on a minibike? Nor will you EVER!!! LoL
Photography is about macho factor. Even if your arms are wimpy, they just look bigger holding a pro-DSLR!
When I’m carrying my 1Dx with 200mm f1.8 attached, every other person asks me if I’m a pro!!! LoL
When carrying a 4:3 only another 4:3 guy will say anything.
I’ve seen guys carrying 4:3 get stepped on by a guy hurrying over to check out my rig.
Be a real MAN, get a DSLR!!!! Bill, are you getting my drift?!?!?!
