4:3’s are like minibikes compared to real motorcycles! Ever seen a Hells Angle on a minibike? Nor will you EVER!!! LoL
Photography is about macho factor. Even if your arms are wimpy, they just look bigger holding a pro-DSLR!
When I’m carrying my 1Dx with 200mm f1.8 attached, every other person asks me if I’m a pro!!! LoL
When carrying a 4:3 only another 4:3 guy will say anything.
I’ve seen guys carrying 4:3 get stepped on by a guy hurrying over to check out my rig.
Be a real MAN, get a DSLR!!!! Bill, are you getting my drift?!?!?!

Come on, Sharpie, these are the real Hell's Angels today! They couldn't pick up a Harley if it fell over, their arms are too short, and they have brains the size of a walnut!

Hey Peter! I love the Vespa and really don't care for the Harley and that makes my brain shrink?? I am neither Hell nor Angel. Angle may be? But not triangle.

Have a great weekend. Captured in Cambria several years ago, with a P&S.

Ha ha ha good for you. The only reason I still have a FF DSLR is I also have an SLR (actually 2) and I still shoot film. So a FF DSLR body makes sense.

But more and more when I shoot digital, I am shooting with my Olympus M43 camera. It is my go-to everyday carry around camera, adventure and travel camera. I could see having M43 and Medium format digital kits in the future, (when medium format comes down in price, as it will).

Now that Olympus is making pro lenses for M43 I cannot think of a reason you should get a DSLR. But I'll loan you A DSLR if you want to try it. Ok wait... Battery life. DSLR battery life is superior to mirrorless. But you can carry 5 extra batteries and the M43 camera and extra batteries are STILL smaller and lighter by 50% than the equivalent DSLR.

Beware you have started a firestorm. Heated opinions will soon follow!!

For me it is mostly the ability to create striking images. Changing focal lengths for different looks. Using Picture Controls to get different looks like I did in the film days. I don't want to just "record" what I saw. From the beginning, I have wanted to capture what I felt about what I saw. DSLRs do that for me.

My focal lengths go from (FF equivalent field of view) from 28 to 800 mm. Normally I keep one M4/3 camera wide and the other long. I do struggle with "striking images" as my composition skills are lacking compared to my technical knowledge.

I treated myself to first DSLR for my birthday in January (at my age you can buy your own presents) but been in serious photography for 50+ yrs (had a side business, specializing in weddings for years) from film SLRs thru current high end P&S "bridge" cameras until the DSLR. (Reason I started following UHH in fall, joined in Feb)

Quick things I like about it is obviously the quality of the glass, higher MPs, the superb sensor system, inter-changeable lens, RAW ability, and just more control. What I don't like is cost of accumulating camera & lens, gadgets, etc - becomes more ego-driven vs pratical - the weight of carrying all and the learning curve. Six months later and heavy study of a 365-page manual, I still disappoint myself often. Taking many more shots and more time to get what I want. Although I felt it was the next step - gotta stay fluid or you become gel - some days not convinced it was worth it, especially if I miss a shot I would have captured with my Sony DSCs.

I've been doing photography for 50+ years too! My 4/3 gear uses Leica glass and, when I use it right, it's good.

If you don't already have existing lenses, I suggest there is no reason today to buy a DSLR. Even Canikon has said the heyday of the DSLR is past. After all D-SLRs are digital SLRs. There is a new kid on the block. A new format without that silly reflex mirror flipping around stirring up dust and throwing oil on the sensor. ;) DSLRs will be around for a while yet, but mirrorless is the future.

"new format without that silly reflex mirror flipping around stirring up dust"

I think that's what I have!

"Be a real MAN, get a DSLR!!!!"

Thanks SS! Finally, an understandable reason. Actually, what started my mirrorless, as well as Panasonic choices was video. And to your point, real MEN don't do that either. Also to your point was that it was two WOMEN that got me hooked on video, my gradDAUGHTERS. One did bail and got a Nikon DSLR a few months ago.

I like the clown! And with a P&S?

My manly RV buddies that drive diesels are lining up to buy electric bicycles! In fact, there was a business article that said Vespa is having declining sales in Europe because of electric bicycles. It is sort of like phones and mirrorless eating DSLR market share only its bikes eating scooter share. Innovate or vacate.

Thank you, and yes, a Canon Powershot A 710 IS. Technology changes, and good images can be captured with any decent camera, smart phone or other. Some things do need the heavy guns, but that's a different issue.

"good images can be captured with any decent camera, smart phone or other."

I have the good fortune to be married to a woman that drags me around the world. My post productive trips were the ones where I stuck with a 1" sensor Sony RX100. Tourist/travel/street images gain from having the technology packed into a small, not threatening case.

Someday maybe I'll rent the biggest DSLR I can find for a few days. When I had a darkroom I enjoyed having a Mamiya with 120 roll film as a big sensor.

120/220 was only medium format! Loved my Mamiyas.
Wonder how many serious photographers here have used that or even large format?

Besides me?

I have no idea what I'm missing by not having a "real" DSLR!

What reasons are there that I should get one.

I don't have any DSLRs or reasons to get one.

Ha! Reminant of the guy driving the monster pickup raised sky high with tires the size of SUVs. What is he trying to compensate for?

Hear hear! Indeed it’s the nut behind the lens that takes the picture. Not the camera. The camera is simply a recording device.

Hint: If you want to take more interesting photos, stand in front of more interesting scenes. ;)
