Do any of you people use a Wacom, or a Huion tablet for retouching a portrait, or anything else? I'm thinking of buying one. If you use one what do you think of it??

Kenny

Hi Kenny, I bought one about 3-4 yrs. ago but it wasn't for me. It worked as it's supposed to but (my opinion) it works best IF you are artistically talented, (drawing, painting, etc.) I'm not. I gave it nearly one month to begin doing better work, but I guess it just couldn't do the job (with ME at the helm) :o) I've seen some beautiful work done with a Wacom by person(s) with much more artistic ability than I possess. Most sales allow a respectable return policy. Why not buy one and give it a try?

I have the Wacam Intuos Draw - it's pretty basic but does everything I need it to do. I've found I can much more detail work with the pen than I can with the mouse, but I think it's just personal preference.

Buy the small Wacom tablet. That's all you need. Don't get the one with all the buttons and bells and whistles, you don't need it.

I use a Wacom, but only to record notes and corrections on sheet music. I'm no artist!

I have the Wacom Intuos Pro. It's the small one. Small is plenty big. In fact it could be smaller and it would probably work better. You can map the size of the touchpad to customize it to your preference and a lot of users do that. The pro has touch sensitivity so the harder you press the more you get of whatever brush you're using. I like mine. I don't use it often enough to become expert at it but when I need it I have it. They aren't terribly expensive either so if you do a lot of editing you should have one, especially if you use Photoshop or similar. It's not really all that useful in Lightroom, for me at least. But when you're doing small detail work like restoring an old print it's absolutely indispensable.

Unless you have 5 thumbs on each hand the Wacom is going to vastly improve your ability to post process, so pay no attention to those who say they couldn't use it!

Im using a small Wacom Intuos , and I love it. Here is my secret to using it.
Once you set it up and its working, put your mouse in the drawer for a week. No mouse, never ever for that first week.
Soon you'll get the hang of the tablet and never go back. It makes editing SOOOOOOOOO much easier. You'll love it.
Ive used a really good ( meaning expensive) tablet, I found that the cheap ones does all I need.

I use a medium Wacom Intuos tablet and have both the Wacom Pen and the Wacom Mouse for use on the tablet.
After a short adjustment period I found it to be the best way to do restoration work.
I wonder about the Cintiq model which is basically a computer touchscreen. It sounds like it would be good but the price is high for me for occasional use.

My only regret was getting the medium Intuos instead of the small. Very good tool.

I use a Monoprice tablet on a Windows 10 PC with PSE. It does what I need it to do and at a fraction of the price of the Wacom's.

Here's a topic and discussion I did on the Wacom.
It explains why many have problems using it.

I bought the Wacom Bamboo. I have tried to use it and put it away then try again. you have to ditch your mouse completely and use it. It is painful, I try and fail and try again. Be prepared to suffer. It I will try again. Be prepared for a tough time.

A tablet is the only way to go for retouching!
