Fricking huge! That's why I opted for the 5D Mark IV. 30mp, 7fps, touch screen, WiFi, GPS, dual pixel focus in LiveView, auto focus tracking in LV, Dual card slots, customizable LCD, same battery works in 7d, 7D Mark II, 5D III, etc,

I have heard that some owners end up shooting with the 30mb file size. 50 is really big unless you really need it. Better have very good glass to use with it too I would think..

Anyone who spends $3,500 for a camera will tell you it great, anyone who bought alternative will tell you why their decision was best. Get opinion from trusted pros who get the camera from the mfg for free to evaluate they will tell you pro and cons

Nice theory, but might not get unbiased opinions from Pros anymore than anyone else!

Uta, this is in reply to the message that you sent.
Within the Canon line-up, there are NO cons to the 5Ds/r.
I use two cameras, a 7Dll and the 5Ds, not the 5Dsr.
Is the r sharper than the s? I'm sure it is on paper but you'd have to prove it to me in as side by side if you want me to believe that in the real world.
I do often shot sports with it instead of the 7ll. It does after-all, have the same basic focus system as the 1Dx! I much prefer the FF since every EF lens made is designed around a FF sensor. That doesn't make them better, it just makes the focal ranges MUCH more ideal and versatile versus the same lens on a crop body.
You asked about lenses. I would use any lenses you currently own. If you are going to shoot ONLY fields of flowers at a distance, them maybe start to think about the sharpest glass but otherwise I would only add new glass as you actually need it. The newest glass has better corners and less aberrations, but with good light and proper exposures, that will be hard to discern. I too have the 17-40 but my most used lens is the 24-105, followed by the 85 1.8 for portraits. Someday I will own the 12-24 but I'm certainly in no hurry!!!
You asked about the file sizes..., I checked a few Raw files with a bit of detail in them and the biggest file I saw was 74MB. The average seemed to be about 60MB. I wouldn't worry about that to much unless you use a lot of layers in PS. My computer is nothing special. $600 on sale at Costco. It's an Intel dual core i7. Compared to what I hear most run here it's a toy but handles the files just fine.
When I went from a crop to a FF the thing I immediately missed the most was NOT having a pop-up flash and had to upgrade my flash for just a quick indoor shot.
Is it the best camera in the world, hell no, I'd MUCH rather have a Phase One!!! LoL
Uta, if you want me to post a pic, just let me know and I'll post a 100% crop. Good luck with your choices!

Do you regularly make 24x36" and larger prints? If so, it's the camera for you. If you never print anywhere near that large, then it would likely be a waste of money.

5DS models are a great choice for landscape and scenic shots. Also excellent for architectural photography. They give near medium format digital quality for commercial work (at a considerably lower cost than MF digital).

5DS and 5DS-R are not an ideal choice for...

1. Low light/high ISO.
2. Sports/action.
3. Wildlife, especially small, fast moving birds and such.
4. Video.

6D, 5DIII, 5DIV, 1DX-series are all better low light/high ISO cameras. 6400 expandable to 12800 is the top selectable ISO for the 5DS models. 5DIV goes up to ISO 102400, three full stops higher.

For most people, crop cameras are often a better choice for sports/action/wildlife/birds. Faster frame rates and more effective "reach" with smaller, lighter, less expensive lenses (for example, compare a 300/4L on a 7DII with a 500/4L on a 5D- or 1DX-series camera).

The best full frame Canon for video currently is the 5DIV (4K). Prior to that, the 5DIII and 5DII are darned good, too (HD).

The 5DIV is the first full frame Canon to have Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus in video and Live View, which is much, much faster and more usable than the previous contrast detection autofocus method. It's viewfinder based AF system is also more advanced... very similar to the very top-of-the-line 1DX Mark II's (lower light capable and more configurable than 5DIII or 5DS models).

5DS and 5DS-R are essentially 5D Mark III with a much bigger sensor installed (and dual image processors to handle the work load). 5D Mark IV is the "latest and greatest" with a lot of incremental upgrades and added features throughout. Both are great cameras, by all means. But the 5DS models are somewhat specialized, while the 5DIV and the 5DIII before it are more "jack of all trades" cameras. Still, for some things crop sensor cameras can be a better choice than full frame.

Compare for yourself:

50MP RAW files might call for a computer upgrade.... will need plenty of RAM and processor power, as well as lots of hard drive storage space.

Alan,
Why do you say the 5D4 is the best camera for 4K video using dual pixel AF? Isn't the 1Dx Mk II using the same dual pixel AF but perhaps with a higher frame rate? Your statement stimulated my bump of curiosity even though I'm not a DSLR video guy at this point.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

You are absolutely right Todd, for 4K, between the two, the 1D MII is the one to get!
