Thanks. I have no interest or intent fooling with it. Had the local police here, thinking they might be able to recommend an agency to contact. They said there is none. At first he wanted to put it down, but I explained that the fox was not endangering anyone or thing. The officer, eventually accepted my description. The fox does not seem to exhibit rabid behavior. We've been feeding it chicken. I guess there is not much we can do to help. He's quite regular now in appearing. Everyday between 1 - 2:30 PM. He comes pretty close to us for food. We are on a small veranda overlooking the woods, so we are safe.

One of the Wildlife Mgt numbers can probably help. A lot of cops are rather clueless about the Wardens and what they do.

I use the 7DII with the 100-400 mk I and the 1.4X III, works well good IQ.
There are some on the Hog who use the mk II 1.4X combo with the 7DII and other cameras.
Check some of Regis's stuff from before he got his 5Dsr in Dec last year, he was using it with the 7DII for his bird shots. And of course he uses the 100-400 mkII and 1.4X with his 5Dsr.

LFingar - I had to check my photos for 2016. My first thought was I now always use my 1.4III with my 100-400 II. But, the results proved me wrong. I start with this thought because I now have complete confidence in this combo after previously being in the crowd that an extender detracts from the resulting image quality. I have noted AF speed is slower. I picked up the tip someplace to use continuous (AI Servo) back-button focus. This is now my primary shooting method but it comes from experience where the extender slows things just a bit for single shot with my 5DIII. Another tip is to not expect peak performance wide open at f/8 with the extender. Step down a bit to f/10 to f/13 and you get better depth of field and sharper results, assuming light in the situation allows.

Images I've posted from the Tall Ships Festival and dragonflies at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago this summer include multiple detailed images using this combo. If you click on the image where the link takes you to Flickr, the image technical details are available. Here's still another dragonfly that hasn't been shared yet on UHH shown using this combo at the maximum 560mm zoom:

Thanks for the comprehensive critique, suggestions & photo. Sure looks good to me.
If you remove the "s" in "https" links they will become hyperlinks.

Excellent capture! That should put to rest any doubts as to the IQ of this combination.

Mark, the OP initiated the thread with a different lens. No one is saying your lens will or will not autofocus. The lens being discussed is has criteria that precludes it from being able to autofocus. There are many lens/camera combinations that will autofocus, the op wasn't interested in them.

Thanks. I was only adding that AF does work with my combo. I was trying to be helpful. If my response was 'off the mark", I apologize.

According to the Canon 7D2 manual (page 86) " If an Extender is attached to the lens and the maximum aperture is f/8 (between f/5.6 and f/8), AF will be possible.". The OP's question concerned the 100-400 f4.5-5.6L which would be f8 at full zoom with the 1.4EX extender. Do you have other information suggesting it won't autofocus with that combination?

Thanks for the info and the link! Definitely shows the possibilities for that lens and extender! I plan to keep my 7DII and possibly replace my 6D with a 5DIV in a few months, after the user reviews start coming in. Since you shot that in ff, it gives me a better idea of the possibilities of that combo.

No, I do not. I was simply indicating that I find success at AF with my combo

My comment/question wasn't directed at you Mark (but always glad for your opinion) 😀 It was in response to the assertion "The lens being discussed is has criteria that precludes it from being able to autofocus."
