I am considering getting the Canon 1.4 teleconverter to give my 100-400 L II more reach on my 7DII. I am sure some of you have used this combo. Would appreciate your comments as far as IQ, focus speed, and general ease of use. I have stayed away from teleconverters in the past because I felt they compromised quality but it seems that may not be as much of an issue any more. Of course, if Canon would just come out with a 150-600....!

I have the 7D MII and mount the f/2.8 70 - 200 II with Tele2X III. If I mount the combo on a mono or tripod, the IQ is pretty good. I also hand hold the combo. providing I can stay steady, the IQ is good.

I have Canon 7d mark 2, I use Canon 100-400 L II, with tele extender 1.4. I can hand hold without the extender, but not with it . I use tripod and get good sharp photos, do not seem to loose IQ. I have been using it pointed at hummingbird feeder so I pre focus.

I have never used that combo but I've used the 1.4ll with 100-400mkl a LOT on the 5ll and it works very well. Never noticed an IQ loss though there has to be some.
The better the light the better the results but that's with any lens. I'll be honest I've only used it on my 7ll a few times so not enough to make a thorough comment with the 7ll but seems to be good. But I haven't used it with the 1.4 yet, mainly because I had loaned out my 1.4. I'll make the assumption that it's better on the 7ll than the 5ll. And the newer combo has to be better still!!
Personally I would NOT hesitate to purchase and use the combo you are speaking of.
I have not read the review at The Digital Picture but I'll bet he tests the new zoom with the 1.4 on it and for sure the chart results are on the Comparison section. Check that out, he's VERY thorough!! Good luck

Go for it. Make sure you get the mark III. Don't bother with the 2x teleconverter. Your autofocus will not work with that. The old version of the 100-400 wouldn't work with the 1.4x, so this is a major improvement with the 7DMkII, 100-400MkII and the 1.4xMkIII. You will see very little difference in IQ, but in low light conditions you will notice some degradation in image quality.

I have not found that autofocus does not work with the 2X. I just took this about 40 minutes ago. Tele 2X III - handheld.

The topic of extenders seems to evoke strong reactions on both sides - right up there with raw vs JPEG, PC vs Mac and Nikon vs Canon. Having said that, although I would certainly prefer the 100-400L MK2, I can confirm that the 100-400L Mk1 + the Canon 1.4EX extender (yielding f8 at full zoom) will autofocus with both the 5D3, and according to the manual, with the 7D Mk2 as well. As far as any detriment to the IQ using the Canon 1.4EX with this lens, the topic has been discussed at length on many previous posts (check the search function) and both photos from some of The Hog's best shooters and Canon's MTF charts (on a previous thread) show very small, if any noticeable degradation with the 1.4 and this lens.

Thank You! I've been shooting eagles at the river but they are usually a bit too far away, so, unless I want to get my feet wet......

Just took this about an hour ago. Unfortunately, the fox seems to have Mange or some other skin disease. I've contacted quite a few agencies in an effort to get the fox some assistance, but no help so far.

Anyway, this shot is handheld - Canon 70 - 200 f/2.8 - Tele2x III on Canon 7D M II. I think the auto focus worked just fine.

Thanks for the photo. I feel sorry for that fox though. If that mange doesn't clear up there's a good chance it won't make it through the coming winter. Be careful around foxes. Quite a few have been found to have rabies. I was attacked by one in my yard last year. Fortunately, I didn't get bit. Wailing it with a lawn chair got it to change it's mind about the situation! An 8 yr old girl in the Albany area just got bit by a rabid one a few days ago. Nothing to fool with.

Thanks. I have no interest or intent fooling with it. Had the local police here, thinking they might be able to recommend an agency to contact. They said there is none. At first he wanted to put it down, but I explained that the fox was not endangering anyone or thing. The officer, eventually accepted my description. The fox does not seem to exhibit rabid behavior. We've been feeding it chicken. I guess there is not much we can do to help. He's quite regular now in appearing. Everyday between 1 - 2:30 PM. He comes pretty close to us for food. We are on a small veranda overlooking the woods, so we are safe.
