50mp can't even come close to those. ...

not to spoil your fun but Ansel also used a rather impressive collection of 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 med format camera gear.

I must say I am very impressed with this new Canon 50 mpx cameras. And I am not a Canon shooter yet because I have never before been impressed about any camera from them. I was looking at some pics taken with the 5Ds and 5Dsr that are available on the Canon website in Japan.
It is obvious that Canon is doing a very good thing now in terms of resolution and image quality.
But I can also see that some of the Canon lenses are not up to the task as expected. However the samples show that Canon has already some very good lenses to match with this new line of high resolution cameras.

Looking at the provided sample pictures it is easy to see that those 2 lenses are very soft at most of the picture.
EF24-70mm F4L IS USM
EF16-35mm F4L IS USM

Those lenses on the other hand match this camera perfectly and together they deliver beautiful and sharp pictures.
EF70-200mm F2.8L IS II USM
EF24-70mm F2.8L II USM
EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM with Extender 1.4x and probably also without the extender.
EF500mm F4L IS II USM

I must say it was a surprise for me to see right away 4 out of 6 lenses that match this new cameras perfectly. But maybe it is not a surprise, it would not be a clever move for Canon to only provide picture samples with glass that is not their best.
;-)

Here are links to the sample pics.

Canon is calling the new 5Dr a still camera. Yes, it shoots at 5 FPM but that's not your action shooter camera. It looks like something special, but I am not sure it takes the place of my old 5D Mk III. Comments?

A very balanced and good perspective. Something tells me this is complex and you have nailed some very worthwhile points. Kudos...

Sorry, you will not get the MKIII for $1000. In fact, the retail price for a MKII is $2,300, and the best used price is $1,100. You might see left over MKIIs drop some, and the MKIII's drop to $2,300, but I doubt any lower for a long time if ever.

That said, I have an MKII and an MKIII, both will likely go for sale if the new ones come out. I'll give it six months though for Canon to work out the bugs, and to get feedback on the new ones.

It's unlikely the 5D III will go on sale as a result of this release. The new cameras lack a number of the features of the III and are not intended as a direct replacement for it. They are geared to a very specific professional and high end amateur audience. I suspect that later this year Canon will announce a 5D IV.

Just so you know, the new 5 has a MORE sophisticated A-focus system than the 1Dx and using 2 processors WAY better than in the 1Dx. If you think that won't shoot action, think again!
I shoot sports with my 7ll on the 4fps setting to not fill my buffer or my card.
With a 600mm f4, this thing is going to be a birding monster!! ;-)

With all due repect SS, and not being unlike you as a Canon guy, the limitations of frame rate won't make this a BIF camera. Although, if predicted correctly, my lenses should fair very well if I ever decide i need 50 MPX.

I've already seen trolling with the 11-24 F4 because of it's price and admittedly it's steep but not one company provides an UWA of this magnitude. It's truly unique. The belly aching needs to stop until they're used it out in the field. Making predication and negative comments on a lens that hasn't been field tested REDUCES ones credibility substantially. I might receive negative comments but at least I'm keeping my eyes open until we see real results.

Thank you. Opinion, which is subjective, and dependent upon the knowledge and experience of the commentator, is valuable.

With something like this sample size is important, not just who has the voice, the distribution, or access to the "Bully Pulpit".

Measured input seems to have value to many in the larger community. This seems to be an interesting and complex discussion that may need thought and balance.

Canon is releasing this as a NEW model, not a Mk-anything. It basically is a 5d series, except for the sensor. Actually, there are two different models, the 5DS and the 5DS R. It will be interesting to see how sales are effected by these two. Time will tell how well they are received.

Agree. That's why I don't think the 5DIII prices will come down anytime soon. The camera is going on 3 years old, so I think we will see a Mark IV before the end of the year.

I agree, and with a 600 mm f4 at the 1.6 crop setting you will reach very long with it and still get 20 mpx pictures. I am sure the market will be flooded with used 5Dmiii only weeks after they start delivering those new cameras. Who would possibly want a 5Dmiii anymore when there is so little difference in price?? Technically it is like a childrens toy compared to the new 5Ds and 5Dsr.

I don't agree on your point here whatsoever. The 5DIII is a versatile camera whereas the 5Ds/r is a niche camera for very specialized needs.

The only way you might see a flood in the market is when the soon to make an arrival 5D Mark IV release is put into the spotlight and even then people will be careful.
