I have a 6D and find it to be a great camera for anything that doesn't move too much. For landscapes, portraits, general "tourist" shots, I believe you will find that it will do everything the 5DIII will do, but for considerably less money. It's every bit as good at lowlight/high ISO shots as the 5DIII. When things start moving the advantage begins to swing towards the 5DIII. The 6D can handle a considerable amount of movement. I have taken BIF shots and moving trains with fine results, but it takes more effort and your keeper rate will be lower. It can't compete with the 5DIII in this area. I was in a situation similar to yours, except that I have the 6D. Was considering moving to the 5DIII and selling the 6D but ended up keeping the 6D and buying the 7DII also. Now I feel that I have the best of both worlds.

I just updated to the 5D3 and so far it seems to have been a good choice. I was using a 70D and the 5D3 is much better in lower light. Time will tell , I do know this will be last body for awhile.

Thanks for the reply. I do like to take BIF and the grandkids running about , my 7D is fine for this if the light is good but do not like going above 400 ISO because of the noise.

Unless you are thinking of taking advantage of lower prices on 5DIII with the new versions coming out I would wait and see what those new ones offer.
I have the 6D and the only thing about the 5DIII I really envy is the AF system. Image wise my 6D holds its own for anything it's AF will handle.

The autofocus is really what separates these two cameras. 41 cross type vs. 1.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to wait to see if the prices drop on the 5D3 as my birthday isn't until May , should be some good deals by then.

Thanks for the reply. The AF system is why I fancy the 5d3. AF is good on my 7D but even better on the 5D3.

If the pre release rumors are true the new 5DS s will have an even better AF, but not quite the same as the 7DII.

I'm saving my pennies for either a 7DII to go with my 6D, or, if they announce a 6DII this coming year with, say the 7DII AF and a tilting touch screen (they can leave that off, just give me improved AF) I would be willing to save even longer for it.
Maybe get a used or refurb 7D or 70D in the mean time and pass it on to my daughter as an upgrade to her T2i. If I am getting things for our youngest chick I can get away with spending more.
Esp if I sell off some of my gun collection to raise all or part of the money and go down to only one safe in the closet. Of course the extra room goes to my wife.

Although the AF system on the 5D III is hands down great, one thing you might consider beyond the better build is the similarity of the button placement and controls between the 7D and 5D. Not so with the 6D.

If you are prone to changing settings without looking at your camera, it will really be seamless for most situations.

Stats for the above images: F6.3, 1/125, ISO 1250, metering mode "Pattern" No Flash, Manual control, Auto White Balance.

Kay, if your stats are accurate, those shots could have easily been shot at f3.5 with almost any lens(or faster) and using a tripod you could drop your speed as well.
That would buy you almost 3 stops. That Would drop your ISO to the 200-300 range and could have been shot virtually noise free with even an entry level camera.
I would have shot those on a tripod at ISO 100!! Just saying. ;-)

I bought a 70D and was looking at 7D or 70D at the time. Even though the 70D has been great, I wish I spent a little more and bought the 7D. I can see this being a similar issue. If you can do it, just spend a little more and get the 5D. One other thing, will the lenses be compatible going from crop to full frame?

I use a Canon 7D at the moment but would like to take more landscapes and low light shots (indoor and out). Lenses I have are 50mm 1.4 , 100mm2.8 , 16-35mmF4L , 24-105L , 70-200MMF2.8 L and 400mmF5.6L. Would like to upgrade to full frame , which would you choose 5D3 or 6D.

Canon is offering a $300 mail in rebate on both cameras from Feb 1-28 for both cameras. Good timing. I was just checking these two out yesterday. Information is straight from their website. List price $3099 and 1799. You've got the whole month to think about it and could wait to see what the new ones are going to look like, among later this week.

I have been using a 60D and also wanted to go to FF because of my focusing on landscapes. I too considered going 6 or 5 or even a used 5D 2. I just don't need the bells and whistles. The 5D 3 is amazing and then I realized perhaps too amazing for me. Looking at the 6D, I would even strip some stuff. I don't do video. My 71'st birthday and I got the 6D. I have never seen one or touched one. I have had flu and I fell on ice so have not shot it much, but looks good.

Good luck! J. R.

If your intent is landscapes or other slow moving scenes, most likely you won't need the features of the 5D. Considering the sensors in these two cameras, image quality should be the same. I don't think you need to spend the extra money assuming your stated subject matter. Love my 6D and actually its doing a great job at capturing birds as well. Good luck.
