I have never lost a single file from an SD card, nor a CF card. But I have had to recover files from customers cards, and each and every time they were generic or non-branded cards. Usually with much smaller actual capacities than were printed on those cards. Stick with the name brands from reputable sources.

Same applies here, virtually word for word.

Achamar, maybe the better question should have been, " who HAS lost a file?".
Should be a whole new set of respondents.

I've seen quite a few posts about people losing stuff due to SD cards going bad, corrupting.. etc... since I have been a member here... and I feel for all of them. That would be awful.
I want to first start with this just to keep me safe.. "Knock on wood"... lol
I have never lost anything from an SD card (I do backups a lot, but that's irrelevant if the SD card doesn't work to begin with when inserted into your computer). How many of you have never lost anything due to an SD card going bad?... literally nothing...ever?
I've never had a problem yet. Wondering how many of you have literally never had an SD card problem that caused you to lose files. I'm hoping a lot of you.

I've personally never had a problem.

I had an 8GByte Transcend card that was a few months old, tested and used it, fail completely on Vacation. Lost 20 pictures, no recovery software tried could get anything from it. I had just put the card into the camera an hour or so, sat down to review images.Reading a review of Transcend cards, looks like a 10% failure rate. I also had a Sandisk UHS-1 card fail completely in an Olympus EP2, and a replacement card fail completely. The third one works, I suspect Sandisk corrected a flaw in it. I tend to stick with slower cards from name brands, PNY and slower Sandisk cards.

CF cards- had a 256MByte card develop bad sectors.

Once!!! A 2gb CF card
But I was lucky and was able to recover the images, that is every image that had been taken on that card and the images were given a new number as they were recovered.
It only took me 8 hours at the computer sorting them out.
And yes the card had been formatted each time images were down loaded. And it was a brand name card.

I DID lose an entire wedding… NOTHING on the card when I inserted into my computer. A friend of mine recommended "Image Recall". I was sweating man, I mean this was someone's wedding I lost! I was trembling at the thought of someone's special day disappearing into thin air without a trace of documentation. Guess what? My friend's recommendation actually worked. Not only did Image Recall bring back every image of the wedding, it actually brought up more than a hundred images from previous shoots that I deleted and I of course always format my cards. Wild, but I swear it's true. I was on a PC back then, on a Mac now and I don't think Image Recall works on a Mac, but I may be wrong on that. UPDATE… before hitting "send" I just checked, it IS available for Mac with a free 10 day trial.

I've not lost anything from a card. But there is one photo of an apple from Septemer of this year that I can't remove from the card. Yep, after downloading photos of a concert on Saturday the first shot was that apple. Have deleted each time, erased the card, and swore at it but it remains.

I never fill a card, download immediately using the USB cord (Olympus E-30) rather than a card reader and have no complaints. It seems that the fewer times a card is pulled from its slot and shoved into the reader the better it is for the contacts and the integrity of the card.

Just last week my computer wouldn't recognize my SD card and the micro USB connector on the camera is FUBAR'd. But I got lucky... I was able to put the SD card in my Panasonic video camera and download using USB from it. Cant understand how the camera's can see it and the computer cant. Went out yesterday and bought 2 new cards... and they work fine in the computer.

I've had hard drives go bad but never any solid state media of any kind.
Having said that I feel doomed.

Sorry for the double post.....which raises the question, is there a way to delete one of your own postings that you screwed up?

Several months ago, I had a perfect storm and could not retrieve photo files from a CF card. This had not happened before. After research online, I downloaded one of several programs designed to capture files from damaged data cards It worked perfectly well.

As I had taken photos from a family association reunion, including the group photos, I was relieved to have the images intact loaded on my computer drive.
