It looks like I'll be busy for the next few days. New cameras sure are fun. The only problem I can see so far is how the computer will either my old 50D, and the 7D for downloading photos. When I plugged in the 7D the EOS Utility would not recognize it. It did find the camera after I downloaded enclosed software, but it is the same software for the 50D. It remains to be seen how this sorts out. I'm going to have to figure out a lot of stuff to get the 7D in my comfort level.

Congratulations Bill, I'm sure your photography will go to the next level, enjoy.
Bill, I'm not a software guru, but if your 50D software was to old, the newer 7D system may not have been in there.
Also. The software with the 7D may not be the latest version, since the 7D has been around for a while. When I got my 5ll, I had to update since the online tutorials were different then the old version that came with the camera. Go to Canon online and download the latest firmware and DPP versions.
Anyway, go out there and KILL it !!

Bill, congrats on your new camera, I just got the same one not too long ago and I know you will love it!!! I'm just now feeling comfortable with it and there are a lot of things I still am unsure of but learning more about it everyday. I too, had an older version of software on my computer for my older canon, but installed the new software that came with the 7d and everything works great. Enjoy and can't wait to see the pictures :) :)

I bought a 7D the week it came out in Oct. 2009 and liked it so much I bought a second one some months later. It's an excellent camera.

Now are you talking about transferring the photos from the camera to the computer? If so why not just get a card reader and take them directly off the card and eliminate having to plug in the camera?

So far I have not actually taken any photos yet. I checked all my programs from Canon, on the computer. All are the same updated version as on the Canon website. I lost my old hard drive to a failure, and had to get a new one, and upgraded to Windows 7, from XP. I had to get new software for the 50D at that time. Everything worked fine on the 50D. When I plugged in the 7D, expecting it work, it didn't. The EOS Utility did not start, and would not recognize the camera. I pulled out the manual, and of course it said before plugging in the camera download the Digital Solutions Disk. I did that, and now for the 7D all seems fine. The next test is to plug in the 50D, and see what happens. It does appear that some of the programs on the disk just downloaded on top of the original software already on the computer.

Latest news, I went into the backyard and took several test shots with both cameras. The 7D, and 50D performed as expected, great. I had the 10-22 on the 7D and the 70-200 L on the 50D. I downloaded both cameras using EOS Utility and both worked fine using the same program. Go figure. I'm going to take the 7D to City Park this afternoon for some more shots. Now, I'm going to look at the EXIF data on my shots and see what is posted there. I've had a problem there before, my Canon lenses were not listed on the metadata. There was just a number.

One of the best things you can do is to review the videos that came with your camera. They walk you through the basics which are typically review, but are well laid out.

Bill - I found the focus options took some getting used to on my 7D. I was using the zone system initially, but didn't like the results. When I discovered I could enable / disable different AF options, I now use primarily AF point expansion along with 19-point and single point. I cycled over the 10k counter last weekend, maybe I should revisit the zone AF ... It just seemed those pictures in the first several weeks were a little soft to my tastes. It also took me a while to get used to exposure. It seemed like everything was over exposed initially. I use the exposure compensation much more than my old Rebel the 7D replaced. Probably, my own level of capability needed to advance to meet the needs of this advanced tool .... Enjoy!

I took the new 7D to City Park, in New Orleans this afternoon. I took a few photos of some ducks, and swans in the lagoon. Some good, and some ugh. I used the Tamron 18-270 for all I took today. It was really hot, over 92 F.and sweltering humidity. I don't see how to add some pictures?

Bill, if you wanted to add them without creating a brand new topic, you can click on "Quote Reply" in your last post and that will bring up boxes under your post that will let you add them. Be sure to hit the "store original" box as well. Hope this helps.
