The 7D is an amazing camera. You are going to love it!

As the owner of a 7D, I agree, you will truly enjoy the camera! Wait 'til you experience 8 frames per second shooting!

Hi Bill! Congrats on your new purchase. I am new to the forum so I hope I am presenting this question in the correct place.
I am looking at the 7D for a trip I am taking in a week and a half. I presently shoot with an XSi. I am wondering if you had a hard time learning the camera, is it wise to get this so close to my trip?
Please let me know how steep the learning is with your new camera.

I'd wait to get the new camera after the trip. You are familiar and comfortable with your current camera, you will get great pictures without having to think about settings on your current camera. When you get back, then get the new camera and practice, practice, practice so that you are ready with the new camera for the new trip!

Congratuations! I'm certain you're loving it!
I upgraded from the Canon Rebel XTi two years ago. After the initial "holy hell this is a lot of camera" shock, I plunged right in, found the learning curve not too steep ... definitely achievable.
I'm sure your newly purchased 7D came with the firmware update of last summer which gave it some awesome features like higher burst rate and in-camera RAW processing.
The more you know, the more you want to know! Have fun!

I got a few responses this morning about the new 7D. As you know I shoot with a 50D, which I've had for several years. The layout of the buttons on the back and the top are almost the same. The 7D has a couple buttons that are different, like a RAW/JPEG, and the movie/still-start/stop button. Some of the buttons are in a different place altogether, like the Menu, picture style, INFO, forward, and trash can, are along the side by the screen. Then the new "Q" button. I'm so glad Canon moved the on/off button to a more ergo position near the top left of the camera. So, I can say its Location, location, just like real-estate. There is so much more this camera can do, and I've just scratched the surface. As for you, if you have shot Canon for a few a while, I don't think you will have a problem with the transition. I read the manual, and try something new. The camera is heavier than the 50D, but fits my hand so much better. If you get a new 7D, it will make your trip a real experience.

Where are you going? What lenses do you have?

Hi nbaust,
I have to agree with photonphysicist about purchasing the 7d this close to your trip. It does take a while to figure it out, there are so many more things this camera is capable of doing vs. an older model and I think everyone I know who has this camera had those frustrating moments when trying to learn it, so I would take the old one you are comfortable with and then get the 7d when you get back and have plenty of time to learn about all the wonderful things you can do :) Enjoy your trip and post lot's of photos for us.

I am heading to Yellowstone.
I currently have the 18-250 IS and 18-55 IS lenses that came with the XSi. I recently got the Tamron 18-270 to travel with and I also have the canon 50 mm 1.8.

I have been struggling with the choice of the 60D (weight and price) and the 7D, that is part of the reason I have been dragging my feet.

Thanks for the feedback! Any further info is greatly appreciated.

You might have to update your drivers from the Canon website. My 7d needed that done before it would work on my Mac. Have fun with the new toy.

It looks like I'll be busy for the next few days. New cameras sure are fun. The only problem I can see so far is how the computer will either my old 50D, and the 7D for downloading photos. When I plugged in the 7D the EOS Utility would not recognize it. It did find the camera after I downloaded enclosed software, but it is the same software for the 50D. It remains to be seen how this sorts out. I'm going to have to figure out a lot of stuff to get the 7D in my comfort level.

Bill I got a 7D to replace my 50D. There are quite a few differences study your manual like the camera is a final exam. The best way to upload your pix is to remove the card from the camera and load to your computer directly from the card. If your computer does not have a CF reader then use an accessory plug inreader (CF card plugs into reader and redader plugs into usb port on computer. This works much better than using camera software.
Enjoy your 7D

I have a photographer friend who upgraded to the 7D some time ago. She loves it and her photographs are fantastic.

Todays report on the new 7D. This afternoon, I snapped on my trusty Canon EF 100mm f2.8L IS USM macro lens. I walked out side and took some photos of some of the local dragon fly population. They looked great, then I removed the macro, and snapped on the Tamron 200-500, and shot some birds across the canal. The 7D felt much more balanced than the 50D, since now the weight was better distributed. I got a chance to take a burst shot of a gull, but I was out of sync with using the long lens. Most of the gull was not in focus, not centered, just plain bad shots. I think I should be in the market for a good lens with IS for those birds.

As far as the buttons, I just have to learn where they are on the 7D. The buttons on the top are just about the same as the 50D. I've bought the Field Guide manual for the 7D, and will check out all the features one step at a time, until I've used everyone.

Bill... I too just upgraded from the T1i to the 7D and also having a problem with the Canon Utility program... it will not open and download my pictures from my camera. I've upgraded all the software as well. I just purchased an iMac desktop so it's not that I'm installing newer software to over ride the existing. I've contacted Canon and iMac but have not gotten any feedback yet.
