I would say, forget the books. There are 10's of thousands of tutorials on the web + the same in video hot to's. Anything you want to do, just Google it, you will find lots of help.
I am a seasoned Gimp user, you can ask away and I will help with anything I can.

I downloaded GIMP because you have so highly recommended it and I need something that is more powerful or at least can do more than Picasa. However when I download and install and then I go to the tutorials (does not matter which one) they all look different than what the program looks like when i open it. I am completely frustrated by GIMP but I just keep hearing how great it is.

Gimp has been around for a long time, the interface keeps changing through each iteration. Although it may not look the same exactly, the basics are the same, and the tutorial should apply to all the versions. Gimp is a powerful program and it will take anyone, even a seasoned computer user, some time to get comfortable with using it. If you have specific questions, you can ask here or PM me, I will be glad to help.
Photoshop is no different, I have version 3 from way back and several more up to CS5. Ver 3 looks completely different than CS5, but a lot of the basic functionality is there in both versions.

I do strongly recommend GIMP 2.8 It has thousands of presets. It is as powerful as Photoshop and it's absolutely FREE!

UFRaw or the Unidentified Flying Raw is a free (GNU General Public License) utility that allows you to process RAW image files out of your camera. It can be used as a stand alone application or as a GIMP Plugin.
If you need RAW file support for your camera in GIMP, you can download UFRaw and install the plug-in. This plug-in supports Adobe Digital Negative, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Pentax and Minolta RAW file formats. The download, much like the software, is also free. It can also be ran both as a standalone feature or from within GIMP.
Highly recommended by GIMP stuff reviewers and others.
Gimp also takes MathMap plugins for Topaz: Important, if you could sticky this it'd be awesome

Q&A: Q: can you tell us where this "content aware" / resynthisiser feature is hiding in GIMP? Not being 'negative' but can you or your 11 year old tutor tell us if it actually is in GIMP or has to be downloaded seperately from yet another site and then installed? A: Yes, this is a free plugin for GIMP. It is updated regularly. The resynthesize plugin for Gimp 2.8.2 has not yet been announced. We are all waiting and hope to see it soon. The previous version was 2.6 which works in 2.8 after a fashion (not good). I'll keep the forum posted when the update becomes available. In the mean time, try the heal tool or the Clone tool. Manual operation but excellent tools.
