2 way to take pictures, live view to see it on LCD Screen which uses more battery up and when not in live view you have to look through the view finder. After you take pic then it will show up on the LCD Screen. Go buy you the Magic Lantern series book for the D5100. It is better than the manual that comes with the camera
Click on View then highlight tool bars and see if show up when it expands and uncheck it. Also check addons, have a few thing to remove there.
Make sure you can return it if it will not work in your camera. They look the same sometimes, but the contacts are a little different and they will not charge or power your camera.
Make sure you set up an adobe account and register the programs you have so you will have a record of it also.

Make sure you set your image size to large and Image quality to fine that also helps.

I had problems at first also, use to my old camera. Make sure you set you diopter for you eyepieces. There is a little dial to the right of it. Second I kept turning the dang zoom part of the lens like on one of my old cameras not the focus ring closer to the end of the lens. Third you will see a little green dot in the bottom right when it goes solid your in focus, just barely turn you focus ring sometimes.
Find a big firm bean bag chair and cover it with a solid cloth
