Mr Bridges,
Thanks for posting the images of the 70-200 2.8 vr mk1 lens. I would really love to purchase your lens but my next ssdi check comes in on Wednesday 4/20. If you could postpone the sale to me till then that would be great. I could go ahead and mail you a check dated 4/20 if that would work best for you. Please let me know what works best for you. Thanks again, Steven Jones

Sir, I was interested in the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 ver 1 lens you have. When you list it with the lens’s broken lens shade lip, are you still able to screw on a filter? Some pictures may help in deciding a purchase. Greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks for the information about the difference in the backs and about the brand I need to look for. I’ll check with KEH, MPB, and Roberts where I purchased my 555ELD. Knowing that you brought up Phase One backs, I believe they were used tethered to computers in studio situations and utilized their own proprietary software as well. Many thanks for your feedback and help in this matter. Best regards in all your endeavors, Steven J.

About using a ND graduated filter as a light pollution filter, absolutely not. You need a true light pollution filter depending how bad your situation is. A proper light pollution filter reduces the background glow caused by local lights while allowing the true colors of stars and some deep sky objects become more apparent. When a proper LP filter is used it helps darken the sky to a more neutral dark sky which helps seeing fainter items in the evening sky. I hope that helps clarify the difference.

It’s primarily used for focusing on small stars against a black background. They do make the masks in different fineness of the grid pattern depending upon the scope size or brightness of the stars.
If you use your camera in live view mode and increase the magnifier, you can see the effect of the mask and adjust the focus until you get the sharpest image of the mask’s edge.

Actually the Bahktinov mask is placed on the front of the scope (or lens) to aid in obtaining the best focus of the stars. To mount special filters such as Ha, O2, Si, and the standard RGB filters are placed in a filter wheel which is mounted to the back of the scope and then the camera to the back of the color wheel. Utilizing an Astro program on a laptop will allow you to control the color wheel, exposure times, and focus if you get a motorized focuser for your scope. Check with OPT telescopes or Orion telescopes to see all your options.

I own a Hasselblad 555ELD that was designed to utilize the digital back at that time as well as the film backs. I’ve been searching for a digital back that is used and at a reasonable price. I’ve never heard of the 907x, is there another back similar I should look into? Many thanks, Steven J.

Another phenomenal set of astro images Mr. Ballard. I especially appreciate that you take the time to let us know what all the work it takes to create each one. I myself am just starting Ha imaging using installed Ha filters on modified IR Canon bodies. Just hope for better weather soon.

I completely agree on using the 400/5.6 L on a 7Dmk2 or newer apps-c like the 80 or 90D. The lens tracks incredibly well. Mine has served me well when I go to air shows, and when I use the canon tc-14 mk2 focus tracking still keeps locked on the plane and regardless if anything crosses the image plane, it still stays locked on the primary plane of interest. Also this lens is quite light and easy to handle and exhibits incredible color and contrast without and with the 1.4x mk2 converter.

I can HIGHLY recommend a Canon 80D/90D and the Canon 400mm f5.6 L prime with and without 1.4X II. Matches your cost/weight/quality parameters - is what I use ......happily ! Not sure, but the 80D may be better in lower light..... APSC is as small as you can get for quality work IMO. You will need a 600mm FF equivalent (400mm) to start and then a way to go beyond. For best quality you will want a PRIME lens and an excellent extender. Canon is the ONLY maker to provide an affordable/lighweight 400 prime !

I live in central south Fl, town is called Frostproof, and has surprised me with so much birds in the area, primarily because of all of the lakes around. Last week I had the chance to follow a large rookery of Sandhill cranes as the sun was setting. I’ve seen many other types of cranes along the waterfront of the lakes, and many roosting
pairs of seahawks. I shoot primarily with my 300/2.8 and 500/4 to gain separation from the background. My cameras used are a D810 and D500. This area is in southern Polk county before running into Highland county off of Hwy 27. Hwy 60 is north of us and runs east/west from Naples to Pampano Beach. It would only take 20 minutes to visit our area. Something to consider.

I am going to Florida 2/7- 2/20. I have been there several years ago. I will spend a couple days in Orlando area. Apopka wildlife drive not open on those days. Then go to Merritt Island for a couple of days. Will try Black Point Wildlife drive. Then a couple days near Delray Beach and go to Watchehatchee WMA and Green Cay. The several days in Fott Lauderdale area. Drive over to Naples for a couple of days and go to Corkscrew Swamp. Are the places I’m looking at still good? What might be better or what others should I look at? Also would like to find a good place to photograph shore birds. This site has always been helpful.

If you constantly get intermittent connection between your camera and iPad for a larger screen to view on, have you considered using the hdmi outlet on the camera and connect it to a larger screen that can display 1080i. You can use a cord length up to 25 ft with no signal loss. I found a 14” Trexonic screen when I’m doing night shooting to verify my focus and exposure settings. I’ve found it to be very effective and it cost me less than $125 w/ tax and shipping. I already had the hdmi cords and AC power available to make it all work.

I had a Nikon 8008s and F100 that went sticky on me too. Found some 100% alcohol as my local repair guy recommended and less than 2 hours later I had them back to like new feeling condition. Also had a 1st gen Sigma DG AF 14/3.5 lens whose coating of the barrel became sticky. This time my repair guru who had seen this many times before, recommended using Goo be Gone, and a short time later I had a nice clean lens. Used a little bit of gaffer tape and recovered the outside of the lenshood and it was back looking like a pro lens again. About the problems with the foam in Pelican cases, I’ve already have had to replace it twice due to it falling apart. So I replaced both cases with their respective Trek Pak divider kits. Boy do they make a difference

Interesting topic and timely. I won a Nikon rangefinder in an online auction. You get what you pay for I guess. It arrived and I took it out of box and whole thing was sticky. The body was a green camouflaged pattern. It was factory painted over plastic. Physically and operation wise the unit is like new except for stickiness. I thought about using MEK or acetone but felt that was too harsh on plastic. I grabbed the Goo-Be-Gone and vigorously wiped it down. Still just as sticky!! Figuring it was a lost cause I ended up sacrificing an old washcloth and used alcohol to scrub the case. As much as I rubbed it continued to remain sticky. I rubbed and scrubbed and eventually had a like new rangefinder with no camouflaged paint!!! It is now all factory gray plastic and looks new with no stickiness. My point being, I think it was the painted coating that gave up the ghost that made it sticky. BTW I got the $180.00 rangefinder for $36.00, it looks new and functions perfectly. And it is a Nikon! :)
