Have several of his books covering various regions. They are very handy for finding photo spots (including some off the beaten tourist track) and suggestions for shooting under particular conditions.

I took a private tour of Canyon de Chelly between X-mas and NYE on the morning / day after 4-inches of snow. It was a great trip, below is a list of places to consider as you map your travels and dates:

Santa Fe, NM
Farmington, NM / Shiprock / Aztec Ruins National Monument
Mesa Verde NP
Monument Valley
Four Corners Monument
Canyon de Chelly
Petrified Forest NP
Grand Canyon NP
Holbrook, AZ and Route 66
Organ Pipe National Monument
Tucson Mountain Park
Saguaro NP
Pima Air & Space Museum (requires advanced reservation)
White Sands NP
NRAO Very Large Array (those huge white radio telescopes)
Bosque del Apache NWR (sandhill cranes)

If your route takes you along I-40 through Amarillo, you might want to make a side jog through Palo Duro Canyon, 15 miles to the south.

Just carry their Payboo credit card. You can use it to save 7% on your purchase.

Did you HAVE to go and remind me that I have that card?

I’d like to make a suggestion. Regardless of where you are located, check out B&H’s website. And call them and speak to one of their representatives. They do not work on commission, and are incredibly knowledgeable about all things photography. I have been shopping with them for 20 years and would never consider going anywhere else. And their site has many videos on different topics so it’s almost as good as being there! They will never push you to purchase anything but they will answer all your questions and guide you through your search.
Good luck! I too am looking for a mirrorless camera and I have so many really great lenses. Just remember that while many mirrorless cameras are much lighter, your lenses will still be heavy…
I’ll be interested in hearing what you decide to do!

Good point about the weight of lenses. Can't afford to buy new ones and I've read that ones for DSLR lose some functions (auto focus, etc.) and sometimes quality. So now I'm wondering if just finding a carrying system that works would be the way to go. Weight isn't a problem when I am actually shooting, in fact, it helps steady my hands.
I adore B&H, have never had a bad experience with them. I've noticed that when discussing gear with them, usually the person will review more than just one choice. And sometimes their advice will recommend an item not at the top of the price range! On my bucket list is going to NYC during the U.S. Open, parking hubby to revel in watching tennis non-stop while I go to B&H and just wander enviously and look at everything. Maybe I shouldn't carry any credit cards...

I don’t think you need a lighter camera. I think you need a heavier tripod ! 😎

OF COURSE there is the Digital Phone. My gal friend took a shot for me at the art museum when my camera battery died, and it is excellent on my computer view at screen size!

Oddly, I struggle with my iPhone because it is too lightweight. Almost always some motion blur. I have a slight
hand tremor (just enough that I don't fill my coffee mug to the brim). Once you reach 76, all the parts that should move don't, and all the ones that shouldn't move do!

I don't know what Pentax camera the original poster is using. I find no info on a "Pentax K-DII" model.
Therefore I don't know if it's a full frame or an APS-C format camera. This effects how much weight might be saved going to mirrorless. ...

The K-DII model is quite rare. Made for extremely clumsy people who cannot type well despite having been a writer for 30+years

A YouTuber showed a Pentax mirrorless from 2012. I doubt I could find it again. It might be on the page linked below.

Found it, but is the model really mirrorless? The only place that word is used is in the headline for the clip. The clip indicates that B&H is the source but on the store's web site it never mentions "mirrorless. Now, I'm not the sharpest knife in the photography drawer, but it seems like this might be a misuse of the term.

Your full frame Pentax is quite a handful. Perhaps a "bridge" camera (with a permanently attached lens would be a good choice for someone looking to reduce weight and bulk, the smaller sensor models in particular. The Lumix FZ300 or similar. They're inexpensive and look and handle much like the familiar (D)SLR cameras.

Yes, bridge cameras are a step back in terms of ultimate image quality compared to your , but can be quite good when properly used. People love to carry on about how great cell phone pics can be, but compared to the tiny sensor of a cell phone, the typical 1/2.3" sensor of a bridge camera is much larger.

Thanks. I'll add that to my research. I gotta say that it is doggone annoying to not have a local camera store.Whenever husband and I are in a city that does have a store, I make time to go and at least wander around and look at stuff.

Arthritis can hamper anyone’s ability to move. Photography is no exception. While everyone is jumping on a mirrorless bandwagon, I haven’t as yet. I have a Canon 5D which I love. I also have a Canon EOS 2000 Rebel. It is so light and easy to operate. The drawback is that as a film camera it does have many limitations. If you don’t like spending a fortune on gear, you could rent it. If you aren’t satisfied with the results, bring it back and rent another. After two or three different models, you probably will pick up a camera you become fond of.
The nicest Pentax is the K-1 Mark II. It looks light and easy to operate. It seems. that Pentax doesn’t follow other manufacturers. Perhaps that have their own product design. They might prefer quality design as opposed to a massive Quantity line. This may produce far more solid designs in cameras. An interesting business model. Try renting a K-1. It may be suitable for you. One more thing, don’t forget to take your meds.

Thanks! I'm kind of thinking now that I'll stick with what I've got. My first non-film camera was a Spotmatic more years ago than I'm gonna admit, and from some of the abuse I've put various cameras through I know Pentax are solidly made. Also, it sounds like my current lenses may be less than ideal for a mirrorless body and buying new ones is not financially a real good idea. Maybe instead I should look for the perfect way to carry the one I have, a backpack or sling bag. At any rate, thanks for your explanations.

Do mirrorless cameras have interchangeable lenses like DSLRs? If so, can lenses used with a DSLR be used also for a mirrorless? I have a Pentax k-DII but as I get more arthritic, the weight becomes more a factor. Unfortunately, we the nearest camera store is a 2-hour drive away (I do not consider Best Buy a camera store) and it doesn't carry Pentax so I'm just kind of noodling around looking for information. Thanks!

Save on space and weight by 1) making your own beanbag filled with rice hulls. Lighter and you can make it to whatever dimensions suit. 2) Instead of a tripod, take an I-bolt that mates with the threads in your camera's tripod mount. Tie a piece of rope or paracord to the bolt. Tie some kind of small weight (washer, another bolt, etc.) to the other end. To use, bolt the cord to the camera tripod mount, drop the other, weighted end to the ground, step on the weight and stretch the cord tight. Won't steady the camera as well as a tripod but will add some stability. You'll need to experiment to determine what length you want the cord. I found this very awkward to use at first but with practice it is helpful where tripod/monopod isn't useable. It lives in my camera bag now.

West side of the park seems to have more animals, especially elk and moose. Timber Creek campground and the Kawauneeche Valley and along the headwaters of the Colorado River. After an evening shoot, you should check out Grand Lake at the west park entrance. It's about the mirror opposite of Estes; small, great lakefront views, restaurants from pizza joints to fine (I mean genuinely fine) dining, no movie theater but a thriving community playhouse; bingo in the city park on weekend. Also, check out the Sheep Crossing on the east side. The sheep come down the mountain and cross the road to get to a natural salt lick. Park police have a kiosk there and when they spot sheep up the mountain, they close the road. The sheep just wait until the road is closed and then trot on down. They know the drill! Have fun, I can't wait til we go again.

A professional is one who offers his skills to the public for money. Doesn't matter how much he makes, how good he is, what gear he has or if he knows how to use it.
When I was chair of the trip-state fair's amateur photo competition, every so often I'd get an entry from someone who had cute little business cards, sample photos from their best friend's wedding, etc. A check of the phone book (this was back when dinosaurs roamed the earth) would find them listed. So I would politely tell them to toddle along to the Open division with the other professionals and "professionals."
