I also had this problem. Its an attempt by Nikon to use the proprietary software which comes with your camera. If you use ViewNX2 to open the .NEF files and save them as .tifs, you can go from there with Photoshop. There are some nice features in ViewNX2 comparable to Lightroom for organizing photos, and you can convert the .NEF files to Tiffs after making adjustments for exposure, which is what I did.
I like the effect of the water, but I find the composition confusing. You could try cropping to improve the composition
Suggestion: Donate them to your local high school art teacher. I donated 6 film slrs and my Omega enlarger with timers, bottles, trays, etc, etc. and took the tax receipt I got from the high school to invest in a new DSLR.
Probably really cannot sell anything like this at this point in time.
