HELP!

I shoot in raw only. But when I tried to upload them to my laptop via the SD card slot...my computer "stated" that it did not support that type of file." I've done it many times before with my D3000. On the SD card menu it says they are NEF files, does that make a difference? I've used 2 SD cards, both different, and my computer says the same thing. It will upload them in JPEG, but that's not what I want or need. And when I choose both JPEG and RAW on the camera menu, it will show me the JPEG, but not the RAW. I'M GOING CRAZY!!!!!

What type of laptop are using and what is the operating system? Are you trying to load it straight Photoshop Elements or a similar type of program? Arnold

The new Nikons have a different RAW format. There is a plugin for Photoshop Elements 9. Go to the Adobe website and download it for free. Photoshop Elements 10 accepts the new RAW format.

You probably need to update the Adobe Camera RAW plugin: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows

Well, I can't argue with that. Although I was able to "chat" with someone, who kept trying to sell me more expensive software. Just kept saying no..no..no..finally they got the message.

I also had this problem. Its an attempt by Nikon to use the proprietary software which comes with your camera. If you use ViewNX2 to open the .NEF files and save them as .tifs, you can go from there with Photoshop. There are some nice features in ViewNX2 comparable to Lightroom for organizing photos, and you can convert the .NEF files to Tiffs after making adjustments for exposure, which is what I did.

I tried using the Nikon ViewNX2 which did open them, and it is great for organizing. But I didnt think about converting them in that manner. Thanks for the info. I just widh Nikon would come out with a more substantial editing program...not that I post edit a lot, but it would be better than what comes with your camera. Or they may do...and I just don't know about it.

You can go to help in Elements 9 and in downloads find an update to do just that. This would be an update to convert raw files

RAW is less standard than TIFF and JPEG. The camera manufacturer will provide you with the necessary software to work with the current flavor of RAW, and sooner or later, Adobe et al. will come out with updates or upgrades which can handle it, too.

Nikon and the other camera manufacturers aren't going to come out with more substantial editing programs. They're in the hardware business, and don't want to get tied up with major investments in software development. They need to provide the basics to get your photos into a computer, handle their RAW files, and do some basic organizing and simple editing. Beyond that, they'd be in competition with the likes of Adobe. And they'd have to support multiple platforms (PCs, Macs) and operating systems (Windows XP, Vista, 7, Mac OS X, Linux) and all the combinations of versions and third-party software conflicts. It ends up being a big investment, and that would boost the price you'd have to pay for cameras. It's easier to stick to the basics, and let the software biggies provide the rest. And just to make it a little worse, what do you aim for with your software? The Photoshop Elements consumers, or the Photoshop pros?
