If it’s like all the other Canons I’ve used, it won’t AF while zooming, so if you need to zoom, stop recording, zoom,
and then resume. Also there is a max limit on recording time without stopping and restarting - 29:59 minutes. Make sure the IS is on and use a tripod (preferred) or monopod.

Boy I just tried that and wasn’t aware about focus when zooming. I just tried it and you’re right. I use BBF and found if I let go of the button and press it again it will refocus though after zooming. So I shouldn’t have to stop and start recording. Thank you for that. It’s a great piece of info.

I highly recommend a monopod, if not a tripod. I use a tripod when I can.

I was at this same venue last year. At Harvard university I believe. Upstairs balcony, not a lot of room but a monopod could work.

I’ve been shooting pics of girls gymnastics competitions for years. I want to try doing videos at the next one but have zero experience. I’ve looked at some YouTube videos but not sure which way to go. Manual, Auto or somewhere in between. Not looking for a cinematography masterpiece. Just a decent video result. I’ll probably be using my 18-135 zoom. Any tips or advice is appreciated.

Don’t know if I’m right or wrong but I process my raw file the way I want it then the first thing I do with the jpg is DeNoise. That’s mainly because I usually shoot at high ISO’s and noise is my primary concern. I have tried using DeNoise on the raw file but it takes much longer and I don’t see an appreciable difference.

I just want to throw out one thing that has also been brought up before. Mirrorless cameras are quiet, suitable for auditoriums, press conferences, golf tournaments, wildlife photos etc. The quiet mode in DSLRs involves some compromise. You can't do it through a viewfinder if the mirror is up. Most DSLR's use contrast detection autofocus (slow) when the mirror is up, and their electronic shutters are particularly prone to rolling shutter. There ARE advantages to mirrorless cameras. People who think otherwise are delusional. There are good reasons to upgrade and good reasons not to upgrade. It depends on what you do with your cameras. It's as simple as that. This doesn't have to go on for 12 pages.

12 pages? Methinks that is an understatement.

I'll bet somebody ran into that pole which is probably why the STOP was painted although it would have been better to hang a stop sign "on the pole"!

The way people sorta stop at stop signs might not have alleviated the problem. 😊

I feel a little guilty being the OP for this thread. I had a problem, looks like I have a solution and will try it this weekend. Honestly, I got lost several pages ago.
I would like to post a pic from this upcoming meet but if anyone is familiar with the honeymooners episode of the bank robbery. Ralph had a bullet hole in his hat and said to Ed, “I’m ascared Norton”. However, that is my intention.
Just trying to inject a little levity into this whole thing.

I'm happy you got your issue resolved. Don't worry about the arguments. Most people just tune out when someone drags the discussion off-topic and wanders into irrelevant details that nobody cares about.

Thanks. I had a Minolta Srt101. Many moons ago of course. 😊

I’m not as proficient and experienced here as many are. I like posting a problem I’m having or a question because I generally get exactly what I need to address the concern. That’s what makes this forum invaluable to people like myself. I’m just hesitant many times because of the arguments that crop up, and honestly, beyond my own knowledge and capabilities.
That said, Ysarex gave me 2 excellent remedies for my question/problem that seems to have worked. So for that 🙏,
Again, thank you. 😊

Oh boy. I made that change a few months ago thinking sRAW and mRAW had something to do with file size, small, medium. Again, I can’t thank you enough. My granddaughter has another meet this coming weekend. It can’t come soon enough so I can see what these changes have done.

[quote=Jimmy T]Here is another example (take) on your pic using Topaz Photo AI.
I had to use the manual override for the noise and boost the exposure.
I do like the example that Ysarex provided.

That’s a nice job. Thank you. I can see how it compares to my own.

DPP has to lighten the raw data just as much as Affinity -- it's the same raw file. Both processors are working with the same data. DPP knows its own. It's optimized to work with raw data from Canon cameras. Affinity is a great raster editor with a mediocre raw processor tacked on.

I don’t use dpp that often but maybe I should. Use it for my raw files and affinity for the jpgs. I appreciate your input and advice. I got a lot of useful info from this post.
All their comments are much appreciated.

Yes, only it's not really exposure. It's unfortunate that AP and others name that adjustment exposure. I had to lighten the image which was otherwise too dark.

Which raises another question. By lightening a raw image a considerable amount. Does that affect other things in the photo? Do you lose detail or other qualities?
I processed the raw file with canons dpp and affinity. The only difference was I had to lighten the affinity file more. Applied DeNoise to both. The resulting jpg from dpp looked better to me than the one from affinity.

Here's your CR2 file processed using Affinity Photo. Affinity isn't great at noise filtering so I just left it off, exported a TIF from AP and ran that through NeatImage for some noise filtering.

Yes I processed the picture also. The only thing that bothered me was the huge exposure correction I had to make. It just didn’t seem like the 2 files should be that different but I appreciate the effort. Did you have to make a large exposure adjustment?
