I have several thousand Kodachrome slides some of which I would like to convert to digital format. I tried using a Wolverine Titan slide scanner but the photos came out too grainy and the colors oversaturated.

I am soliciting recommendations for a quality slide to digital scanner.

Thanks

I am considering the purchase of a small travel camera. My choices have come down to Leica C-LUX vs. Panasonic ZS200.

On paper I cannot see any difference that would justify the Leica being over $200 more expensive. Is it worth the extra money other than for prestige value?

I would appreciate comments from persons who have had experience with both brands.

So far we have only shot jpegs. However, raw is a possibility.

For some years now my wife and I (both in our 80s) have been using Apple Photos to manage and edit our photos. When extra fine editing - layers, etc - and printing have been required for entry in various contests (and winning) we have used the services of a local custom editing facility. That facility is moving out of town and we will no longer be able to sit down with them to direct custom editing.

We have decided to bite the bullet and undertake editing ourselves. We both use Apple computers.

We are soliciting your input in the selection of software that will allow us to do a more sophisticated job of editing than is possible with Apple Photos. At the same time we do not need the power and complexity of Photoshop. Please help.

Hi, I've been enjoying my DSLR Canon 80D for over 3 years. I'm currently using a Tamron 18-400mm lens. I mostly take photos of Birds and Nature, some Landscape as well. I'm still shooting in JPEG and so far it is fine. I'm also only using the photo processing program that comes with my Apple Mac operating system. We recently moved to NC and I have joined a local photo club (Carolina Nature Photographers). I've been encouraged to make to switch to RAW. I realize that you have to have a photo processing program/app to work with the RAW, and clearly should have it before you start shooting in RAW. I've received some great advice for the folks here on my questions previously. So all that said, I would welcome any advice on how to start shooting in RAW and what processing programs should I consider. I am aware and have received numerous recommendations for Lightroom. Although I have met a few folks who prefer Photoshop. Thanks for any advice you care to provide.

Hi, I've been enjoying my DSLR Canon 80D for over ... (show quote)

I also shoot all JPEGs. Processing RAW files is too much work and too time consuming for me. I am happy with the results that Apple Photos gives me.

That said, a while back I looked in to processing RAW files with Apple Photos. It can be done and is quite easy. When you load files into Photos if your camera has saved in both JPEG and RAW format Photos loads both files in. However it only edits the JPEG file unless you tell it to switch to the RAW file. That is done by selecting one of the programs pull down menus (I forget which). Then the edit function in Photos works on the RAW file. It is easier said than done.

A good explanation of how to do it may be found by Googling the subject.

Sammy's Camera on Fairfax Avenue is the best full product line camera store in the region. They have everything. I've lived in LA for 60 years and seen a gradual diminishing of camera resources until Sammy's is all that's left. People are friendly and knowledgeable.

I just bought an iPhone 8 Plus to replace my iPhone SD. The main reason was that it is much larger allowing me to see the keyboard which is bigger. I compared it to the iPhone 11. Two things sold me on the 8+:

1. The user interface on the 11 is different from the 8+ and all previous iPhones. I didn't want to go to the trouble of learning a new computer. Also, I serve as tech support for my wife. I thought it better that we have the same phones.

2. The 11 cost almost twice as much as the 8+.

I am very happy with my new 8+.

FWIW, let me add my two cents regarding Pentax products. My experience has been with a pair of Pentex binoculars. They are 8x binoculars with an armored coating. Supposed to be quite rugged. On two occasions, the first time in warranty, I dropped them. Both times the drop was less than 18" onto a carpeted floor. In both cases a plastic cam inside the case broke. In both cases Pentax charged me for repairs. So much for armored cases.
Yes, I dropped the binoculars and it was my fault so I paid for repairs. However, the binoculars should not have broken from an 18" fall. Just plain poor and cheap design. Needless to say I will not be purchasing any more Pentax equipment.

My wife and I took a safari thru Botswana several years ago. She used a D80 with a lens up to 200mm. I used a D50 with a 24-105 lens. Also took a 70-300 lens which I never used. Most of the time we were so close to the animals we could and did reach out and touch some. Patted several elephants on the behind as we drove past, they didn't mind at all. Only a few times would a longer lens have been appropriate and in those cases I cropped and blew up the photos for the same effect. All travel was via boat or open car. Lots of dust, a can of compressed air was handy. Hope that helps.

I will attempt to answer your question and not sell you on a different favorite product.

I have used Photos to edit raw files although not very much. I forget the exact details but Photos loads both jpeg and raw files if they both exist. You have to know if you have set your camera to give you both types. Photos then edits the jpeg as its default. If you wish to edit the raw file you have to go to one of the pull down menus, I forget which one, and tell photos to switch over to raw. It will then edit the raw version of the photo. You then edit it as you would a jpeg. I did not find it much of a burden to switch between the two and the editing works well for me.
Hope that helps.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my original request for information.

I have discovered that Apple Photos will allow me to Post-Process raw files. All I have to do is identify them as raw using the "Use Raw As Original" command in the "IMAGE" pull down menu. Editing then becomes just like for a JPEG.

Your input has been most helpful and very much appreciated.

I would like to try shooting photos in raw mode. I process my photos on an Apple computer using Apple Photos.

As best I can tell, to pre process raw files requires a two step process: first pre process the raw file using the ColorSync Utility in Photos, then finishing with the JPEG produced by the utility.

When traveling, I and my wife take a large number of photos. The above process would be very time consuming. Am I missing something? Is there an easier way to handle RAW files in Apple Photos?

FWIW, I am committed to using Apple Photos so please don't suggest a different editor. I have tried all the most popular ones and prefer the one I'm using.

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.
