Wow. Thanks for the info. We may be in Florida, Ft. Myers, this winter. Do the trees migrate??
The only trees I have seen that are this impressive, aside from redwoods and giant sequoias, are Moreton Bay Figs, ficus. There are a few huge ones within a few blocks of the Pacific in Southern California.

In French class 65 yrs ago we read a story about a baobab tree.
Unfortunately there are none in the US.
Thanks

The town of Richardton contains a gorgeous Benedictine, I think, abbey. Built about 1885. Same group of monks who run St John’s Abbey, College, abd prep school bear St Cloud , MN. Richardton is on I-94 at about milepost 100; ie100 miles from the MT border. You see this tall Baroque abbey about 1/2 mile off the freeway. It is still a working abbey with monks in training.
If you like baroque cathedrals this is for you. They have prayers 5 times daily. But if you’re unobtrusive the Abbott, a pleasant man, the one in the fanciest vestments will welcome you. Just keep to the back. Please leave a small donation.
Also in the area are some huge metal sculptures; cows, arrows, shields.
Theodore Roosevelt Natl Park is in western ND. Badlands. Sandstone canyons that remind one of Grand Canyon.
There are signs reminding you to stay on the paved paths due to the presence of rattlesnakes.
Cell service can be light even along I-94 and with Verizon. But the rest stops are nice abd have good WiFi.
Now winter can be a different story with wind, blizzards, etc.
Eastern ND is FLAT, the remnants of glacial Lake Agassiz.
A lot of German heritage. Lawrence Welk was from Napoleon.
Big cities: Fargo is largest. Grand Forks. Bismarck with its modern Capitol. No domed neoclassical building. Looks like a tall office building sticking up in downtown.
The Red River of the North is the ND/MN border running from Fargo-to GrandForks, then on to Winnipeg. It runs north, which is a problem. North it thaws slower than further south. So there are ice dams with ice and debris piling up, taking out bridges. And so flat, if the River overflow its banks, the water just keep spreading out for miles.
Be careful in the NW around the oil fields. Accommodations may be hard to find.
The farms are often huge, especially the western cattle ranches.
My wife loves to watch their high school sports championships. Especially the small western towns where towns often have-to combine. Two of the stars may be the coach’s kids, and they have cousins on the team. The schools with predominantly native Americans have kids with names like Jim Slow Pony and Tom Three Feathers. And those NA kids play a different, exciting, running game of B ball.
In small cities the biggest employers are often the school system, the hospital and/or clinic if they are lucky enough to have one. Hopefully there is a some small industry.
A good place but hurting economically.
Enjoy.

Wow, I spent my 2 Navy years, 1971-3, at Camp Pendleton.
I took sailing lessons at Jack Dorsey’s Marina, across the road from the airport. I was tempted to stay in San Diego. But the climate was boring! So I moved back to Iowa and Minnesota.

I use Sharpie or a mailing label on everything, including clothes. Years ago we got a call from a motel in Oregon where my daughter had left her camera.
Last week while delivering Meals by Wheels I lost my fanny pack containing my hearing aids ($5000). 3 days later a man called telling me it was still in the foyer of their apartment building. This is small city Minnesota.

[quote=photoam]I bought yesterday at REI this monopod/walking stick.
Haven't used it yet. Looks sturdy. Extends to about 66 inches.
My only question is: how long and how much fiddling to screw the post into the base of my Canon G1X-3?
If this is only a quick stop, will I be slowing the group down?
This pole is in 3 sections with good tighteners on each. I'm hoping that the individual sections will fit into my suitcase. A walking stick is like a cane. Is a cane allowable on the plane??

Trekker FX Lite

Item #: 1557370001
Qty:1

Item Price:
$39.95
Total Price:
$39.95

I did just read on the card with this Mountainsmith hiking pole: “Camera carry weight capacity - 3 lbs, 1.4 kg”.

For us dummies, please explain where these photos show the sunfish. I thought it would be a big blob on the surface.

I use a Canon G1m3. The reviews aren't that great. And it is the largest and heaviest of the G series. But it has a swing everywhere LCD, an adjustable viewfinder, pop up flash plus shoe. Zoom is only 18-40 not removable. And not the fastest camera. But it is a great camera with many functions and capabilities and stays within the G series menu system, which is easy to follow. And one can screw on filters or a lens hood.

My big problem is with the touch screen in my iPad mini.
The buttons are on the left side of the screen. As my hand approaches the screen from the left side, I hit those buttons. “Darn, how did I get here?” Apple has no way to move them to the right side.
With my Canon G1 m3 I don’t have problems.
Now, when I played violin in 4th grade a guy bowing the opposite way was a hazard.
