In Sister Mary Jerome’s 5th grade class, St. Columban Elementary School, Loveland, OH.

We were doing kind division problems, the principal ran in, whispered something to Sr. Mary Jerome. The principal left quickly and we were told that something so bad had happened we could not be told what it was.

We had to all stand up and we prayed about it for a long time.

I use this lens for moon photography and it is incredibly sharp and the color excellent for other uses. With both an a7r v and with an a6500 - giving an effective FL of 900mm - results are great.

Even on a tripod for moon photography I use IBIS and a 10 second delay and manual focus.

As one post pointed out at high magnification atmospheric shimmering can be a problem and leaves mining in a light breeze can be too.

Photo with 200-600mm lens at 600mm on a6500. ISO 400, 1/200 sec. Only resized no post sharpening or other modifications.

So much to comment on….

The test of high ISO noise removal is best done with in-camera high iso noise reduction set to off. This way you are not measuring camera and software noise reduction algorithm interactions.

ISO 24,600? Is this for a test or do many Hoggers reading this actually use an ISO that high? Better results can be obtained with a faster lens, wider aperture, stabilization, a tripod at times and a moderate ISO setting. It can be prohibitively expensive though. So for low-light shooting I go all manual and use vintage fast lenses to overcome the expense of modern ultra fast lenses.

Here is an example. Taken at 1am, lighting - two porch lights about 30’ (9.1m) away each, and two residential street lights about 100’ (30.5m) away each.

Sony a7r IV in APS-C mode, Hand held, IBIS active, lens - Canon R 58mm f/1.2 (year 1963 lens) at f/1.2 using a Zhongyi Lens Turbo (speed booster) yielding an effective aperture of approximately f/0.91 and an insanely shallow DOF - not good if you are doing low-light landscapes, ISO 8000, 1/10 sec.

I used DXO Deep Prime XD to remove noise.

I am experimenting trying to find the optimal low-light solution.

I have used DXO since PhotoLab was first available. The user interface is very different from PS and LR that it was intimidating at first. But after a short “break in period” I found it user friendly and efficient.

Every time I have been to Yosemite, traveling light for a multi-day backcountry trip, I have wished I had the big lens to shoot something across the valley, like climbers on half done from the north rim.

Note the background of my photo.

And every time I have had a lens range of 12mm to 900mm (600mm lens 1.6x Canon crop factor) I have used the widest and the longest options and several in between.

It may be a hassle but a greater focal length range provides more opportunity.

Technology is advancing and for stills background removal without keying works well.
But if you have a 10 minute video at 60 fps that is 36,000 frames to fix so keying is much more efficient.
Future technologies may solve this too.

DirtFarmer is right with modern digital technology you can key on any color - however that color may be in the frame on other objects etc.
Years ago blue was the preferred keying color but it is also very common in clothing.
Chromakey green is far from facial tones and rare in clothing so it works better than blue or red (common in skin tones).
The downside to chromakey green is that it throws back plenty of green light because of its luminance and you may find unwanted greenish shades on some objects.
Care in lighting, and camera settings can fix this.

I too would go used. I am a Canon, both DSLR and mirrorless, shooter and now a Sony mirrorless shooter too.

I have several Canon M cameras and shoot with EOS non - M lenses via an adapter.

However I have become a dedicated Sony mirrorless user because of many factors.

My recommendation is a USED Sony a6500.
I have one and it is fabulous.

I bought it for extra reach with my Sony lenses because Sony teleconverters are so expensive. My other Sony cameras are FF.

The effective focal length for the Sony APS-C is 1.5x.

Be careful because features differ widely across the different versions of Sony’s APS-C cameras.

The a6500 has IBIS and the size and weight are great for portability.

Unlike Canon’s M series the Sony e-Mount is the same for FF and APS-C cameras.

Find one with a low shutter activation count and the price should fit your budget. I bought from KEH but you may find a better price on eBay but with a higher risk of a problem.

I never use a strobe so cannot give an opinion on them.

Just to be sure - is this an E-mount lens?
