you could put a toothpick in the hole and break it off in the hole level with the surface, then try to screw the screw in it.

Filters? Use them or not?
I would say trial and error is the best way to go, because every shot is different. Doing it this way you will get the knowledge of what works with what scene. That's just my opinion.
