Hi. Just connect to PC and turn on 'EOS info'.
If you don't know it, EOS Info is a free (I believe) program that allows you read shutter count and edit basic info such as camera owner and set the clock on your Canon camera.

A Sony NEX 5 mirrorless has a clip-on optical viewfinder and can use the older Minolta and Sony lenses with an adaptor if on a budget. IIRC it has a 14mp sensor and I read good things about it. Also very reasonably priced used these days. May be worth a look.
