Shooting in bright sunlight

My last optical viewfinder P&S digital camera just died
I need to shoot in bright sunlight (high desert). The camera needs to be inexpensive
because it gets left in the car, taken backpacking and tent camping, etc.

Is there anything out there short of a DSLR that has an optical viewfinder?'
(I shoot film for high-end--but I don't like scanning.)

If not, is there anything out there in the low-end that has a sun shade on its
LCD display? (I thought bright sun was supposed to be good for
photography!)

Or do I need to build a sun shade? Or mount a viewfinder to the top?
I already wear a wide-brimmed hat-but it's not enough.

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I need current availability.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Can't you still find a similar replacement
for the deceased ? Maybe even pick up 2
or 3 since you subject them to conditions
that shorten their working life ?

I'd love to. Do you know of a digital P&S with an optical viewfinder?

Is the move away from optical viewfinders a case of "demand-pull"
or of "supply-push"?

Optical viewfinders appear to be extinct on P&S cameras.
Now the industry is pushing high-end MILCs, which ralso elminate
the optical viewfinder.

Going back over old threads on UHH and other forums, and magazines,
I can't find any posts from 5 years ago saying "Dang those optical viewfinders,
I wish they would get rid of them!"

Only when the industry started pushing MILCs did such posts suddenly appear.

Are people really unhappy with the optical viewfinders in their DSLRs?
Is there something wrong with the viewfinder in the Nikon D850?
Or the Canon 6D Mark II? Or Pentax K-1?

Or is this all about cutting costs and increasing margins and corporate profits?

The optical viewfinder on my 2009 Canon G11, which was not a "budget" camera, was pretty awful but better than the screen when shooting in bright light.
The optical viewfinders on my Canon DSLRs are good.
The EVF on my olympus bodies are great with some real advantages over DSLR optical viefinders (and a few disadvantages).
I am not aware of high end MILC that had optical viewfinders, beside Leica.

Only the older Canon G series and the last one of them was back in 2013 - The Canon G16. That I am aware of.

Try a Lumix TZ70, that could fit your requirements.

I have two "P&S" type (not really) cameras; a Canon G12 and a Canon G7x. The G12 has an optical viewfinder and the G7 LCD. I loved the G12 but the shutter lag, GAS attack, and seeing the results of my cousin's G7 caused me to buy the new one. Without a doubt the G7 is fantastic and the touch screen controls are easy and very handy.- absolutely no complaints. BUT, I was shooting in bright sunshine and the LCD viewer was a bear to work with. I really had a difficult time just seeing the subject let alone evaluating any detail.

I guess I will have to find a solution to this but dread having to carry around another accessory (sunshade, loupe, etc.)

Wearing glasses I find the hoodman hoodeye indispensable in bright light- have it on all our Canons and Sonys. Have you thought of buying a used dslr or mirrorless? Lots out there at very reasonable prices and will be a far better camera than any comparably priced new point and shoot. Eg a canon t3i with lens is around $200 on ebay, a 7d body is under $400 etc.

A decent solution and I do not know about your photographic expertise is to buy a mirrorless, 3-4 years old with an optical viewfinder.

you could just get a p/s with a screen at rear , make a open box that fit the rear , this will shade the sun from rear .

Are you married to optical viewfinders? Why won't an EVF work for you?

If you can find one (ebay - Amazon etc.) it should do the job

You can find any number of used Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS cameras for about $35.

A Sony NEX 5 mirrorless has a clip-on optical viewfinder and can use the older Minolta and Sony lenses with an adaptor if on a budget. IIRC it has a 14mp sensor and I read good things about it. Also very reasonably priced used these days. May be worth a look.
