I photographed the bird at Sylvan Heights near Scotland Neck. My understanding is that the bird was captured near Chowan Swamp and placed in Sylvan Heights because of a poor chance of survival in the wild.

Thanks-going to Hatteras in a couple of weeks and may make a side trip if we get the chance.

I am posting two images; one of a "normal" Wood Duck that we are all familiar with. The second is a leucistic Wood Duck drake. A leucistic bird (or any other animal) is one that genetically has a defect in the way melanin is deposited in feathers, hair or skin. They are not albino; they do not have complete lack of pigment. Look at the eye ring, beak and even some of the feathers around the vent. The leucistic duck was photographed in North Carolina. Yes, the image was processed in Photoshop, but was not "photoshopped". This is the way the duck was.

Just out of curiosity-where in NC did you get this great shot? I'm also in NC and would like to try to find him.

Thanks,

Jim

Went to Oregon for Thanksgiving and my sister took me to a local slough with lots of ducks and fog. They suddenly all took off. The reason is the last 2 photos!

They are among what is possibly the most ancient living group of chewing herbivorous insects, dating back to the early Triassic around 250 million years ago.

This one has beautiful colors. Taken in Florida, I rarely see them.

Beautiful grasshopper/great catch. My ID says it's an Eastern Lubber Grasshopper.

See the following article from Yellowstone National Park about all the changes brought about by the re-introduction of the wolves. Really fascinating.

Wasn't able to make the link active. Sorry.

Good thought not to eat them.

The black and white ones are called turkey tail mushrooms. They ARE edible but are tough and chewy meaning they are not the most delicious mushrooms out there! The others, don't have a positive ID on-sorry.

You're right-I didn't check the range! Cladonia deformis is most likely the one-especially since range is upper Midwest/Canada

This looks like the lichen Cladonia deformis. There are very few green fungi like Russula aeruginea and Hypomyces luteovirens.

Could it also be Cladonia asahinae, the Pixie Cup Lichen?
