Interesting. Is that growing on a rock? If so it is likely a Lichen. Lichens are a combination of a Fungi and an Alga. They also grow on trees. There are a huge number of them in many different colors and shapes and textures. They are hard to ID since they are a combination of two distinct species. Look up Lichen for more information. They are an enigma to even biologists. Good subject hunting.

Some lichen deriver their water from the surrounding air. An interesting lifeform.

Yes, whence the ability to live on rock. They also are able to get trace mineral from the rocks. The alga is of course photosynthetic.

I had never thought of it being a combination of a Fungi and an Alga. I shot this one on the same day and thought it was a cup fungus but it is probably a combination also. I found the color green curious for a fungus.

We used to have a guy come to Kingston, NY every year and tell us how he got all his nutrition from the air. He called himself a breatharian. I couldn't find anything online about him. I guess people got tired of being fed stories like that. They got fed up. They wanted a breath of fresh air.

Okay, so I guess he's not alone. Here's a film about them. https://www.lightdocumentary.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjw2P-KBhByEiwADBYWCkmeC63KfvoTgYptA6QwjtzsEBdIbtFO_eGI8F3DPBsBmQ2Pa3MEIBoCY5UQAvD_BwE

This looks like the lichen Cladonia deformis. There are very few green fungi like Russula aeruginea and Hypomyces luteovirens.

No idea. But besides fungi and lichens (lichens tend to be tough), there are also slime molds which can look like fungi but are not.

It's a wrinkled crust (Phlebia radiata). It's found not only in North America but also Great Britain, Ireland, and Europe.
