There is no such thing as an “always all around best for everyone for everything” anything…camera, lens, car, truck, gun, etc. What is currently best for you will depend upon: your shooting interests (portraits, landscapes, astro photos, etc), your budget, your handicaps if any, and your situation Do you currently have a lot of Canon, or Nikon, gear inherited from a parent? Are you interested in working in a studio, or doing ‘run & gun’ travel, or wildlife, photos? Do you want to remain a snap shooting amateur, or do you dream of becoming a pro? Can you afford to buy new pro gear, for thousands of dollars, and grow into it skill wise…or would a $400.00 used item be a struggle to afford? Every make, model, etc, has it’s fans who think their favorite is best for everything. There are as many opinions as there are grains of sand. Take all with a grain of sand. For lowest cost, get a discontinued DSLR, like a Nikon D7000. For future proofing, buy a much more recent Mirrorless item like the Nikon Z7II. Compare Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Canon, etc, models, and see which gives you features you like at a price you can afford. I like the Nikon Z system, as the amateur (Consumer), and pro, cameras use the same lens mount and can take the same lenses. Also, the FTZ adaptor lets me use my old DSLR lenses on the newer mirrorless cameras. So, I can spend less on lenses, and put more into cameras. Other makes / models have their own pros and cons. Doing your own research will give you the best info. If you don’t want to do the research, and just want a quick answer, I suggest getting a Nikon Z50 Consumer camera. It has many beginner type features, with some pro features. Later, add a more pro type Z camera, such as the Z7.

I had one years ago. It was great, considering it’s build. I never had light leak problems, but knew others who did. It is a coin flip type gamble…either you get leaks, or you don’t. Mine cost me $20.00, so it was a great deal quality for cost wise. I ended up giving it to a pal who wanted to dabble in Medium Format film. I got my money’s worth out of it before passing it on. It does not compare with Nikon, or Hasselblad…but does not cost like them, either.

I never bother with camera insurance. I am not clumsy enough to drop / bump my photo gear, and no one is bold enough to try stealing it. The last fool who did break in, to steal, got three bullets for his trouble. It kind of deters copycats. My Insurer is Walther Arms. I need no other.

A used D7200 is a bit newer, but also discontinued. To future proof a bit, shop for a used D500 DSLR, or used Z50 MILC. Shop between Thanksgiving, and Xmas, to get a still lower price. I recently got a Z50, which is a DX format mirrorless camera. I still use my D750 FX system. With the FTZ adaptor, I can use my older DSLR lenses on the Z50. Eventually, I will retire the D750, and replace it with an FX Z camera…a Z8, or such. KEH has some affordable Z cameras. I have never had problems with KEH. Abe’s Of Maine has even lower priced new Z cameras…but Abe’s is notorious for selling Grey Market goods with no US warranty, and not including accessories-owner’s manual, battery charger, etc-which most retailers do include. Another thing to consider is WWW.ThePhotoCenter.com in New Jersey. They have new, and used, cameras at reasonable prices, and offer a layaway program. Put 10% down one month, and you have 6 more months to pay it off…for a 7 month payment window. Currently, the Nikon Z50 Creator’s Kit With FTZ mount adaptor is selling for $1,399.99. It comes with: the Z50, a microphone, wind screen, a battery, a battery charger, a charger cable, a Z16-50mm lens, a Joby GorillaPod tripod, a SmallRig mounting plate, and neckstrap. The SmallRig lets you mount the tripod to the side, unblocking the lowered view screen for selfies, vlogging, etc, to let you see what you ate shooting. There IS another Creator’s Kit which has all the same EXCEPT the FTZ adaptor. Be sure to get the one you want. Closer to Xmas it will probably be closer to $1,099.99, or $1,199.99. Divided by 7 payments $1,199.99 would come to $171.43 per month. Save up a bit between now and December, put a system on Layaway with the money you saved, and then pay the balance off over the following months. I have bought several cameras, and lenses, this way from The Photo Center in the past 5 years, or so, and never had any problems with them. The Z50 is a good, all around, general purpose, Consumer camera with some Professional features. It is a DX format mirrorless item. A Z50 body only would be $859.99 now, and less closer to Xmas. If you prefer a full frame FX camera, the Z5 would be worth considering. Currently a body only Z5 costs $1,299.99 at The Photo Center. It should be less closer to Xmas. The only DX format Z lenses are the Z16-50mm, and Z50-250mm. Other Nikon Z lenses are FX format. Some third party lenses are available from Rokinon / Samyang, and others. I get no commission, or such, from The Photo Center. I have been in a position to do some budget buying, and so have experience with them. If you are on a budget, consider them, and their layaway program.

In Pacific regions-Japan, Australia, etc-most pronounce it as in ‘hit’. In most of the USA, it is usually as in ‘high’. Africans I have met usually pronounce it as in ‘knee’. Since it is a Japanese word, I suppose the ‘hit’ pronunciation is “correct”.

I'm currently waiting for the local camera store to receive a shipment of the long delayed 24-200 Z lens and have been checking what reviews are out there only to find a rather mixed bag of opinions. If I get this lens it will replace my favorite Tamron 35-150 which currently lives on my Z6. I know this is a much slower lens but would the better low light capacity of the Z6 compensate for that? How is sharpness and overall image quality? I looked at the picture gallery at DP Review and what they showed was a very disappointing collection of amateurish snapshots that didn't do anything to highlight the lens' capabilities. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I have no experience with that lens. However, I generally avoid zooms which have a top Focal length more than 3 times the lower focal length. I sometimes stretch it to Four times...so a 24-72, or 24-96. A 24-200 is 8.33 times. I wouldn’t use it, and would expect it to be less sharp than Something smaller...a 24-70mm, and 70-210mm, for example. Where do you plan on going with one lens that you absolutely can’t take two lenses?

It is a collector’s item, and will become more so as time goes by. The less you use it, the more it will be worth if you ever sell it. Whether it is currently worth what you paid, I can’t say, but I suspect that it is, or one day will be. Let the wife have something she craves / collects so the craziness is not all one sided.

I still have a Nikon1 J5 mirrorless. It performs well. I have the FTN adaptor, and use my F lenses on it. The 2.7x crop factor is cool. I am considering a mirrorless apsc as a replacement for my D7200, but the Z50 doesn’t quite do it for me. I will wait awhile, and see if Nikon offers something a bit more in a Z60, or whatever, any time soon. When my D750 needs replacement, I will see what Nikon is then offering in the way of FX mirrorless. Currently, my D750 Is still worth using. Mirrorless is the future, but DSLRs still have some life left in them yet.

A member of a Photography club has been accused of misconduct and inappropriate behavior by several models. Photography Club leaders are hesitant to act, stating it's not their job to police members' business practices. Club bylaws say members can be removed for misconduct. The argument is it's not the club's board members' place to prove misconduct. This isn't an accusation from one model. It's several with similar takes. Can I get some thoughts on this please?

If the models call the cops, and press charges, that will fix it. He can’t bother them, or others, from inside a cell. If the models are not concerned enough to press charges, no one else should be concerned at all. How hard was that?

To each his / her own. I prefer prime lenses most of the time. When I use a zoom, I usually prefer to stick with 3 power, or less...a top focal length 3 times, or less, the bottom focal length. My old 28-80 G zoom has a top FL 2.8571 times the lower FL. I stretch the point, a bit, when going for a birding lens at 4 power...with a Sigma 100-400mm....which has Optical Stabilization. I have found that the Superzooms (8x, 10x, etc) are never quite as sharp as the lower power zooms. The 70-200mm is very sharp, and also a 2.8571 power zoom. Get one when you can...and put it on a Full Frame body. The D750 is getting more affordable all the time. On a DX body the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is effectively a 105-300mm f/4.2 lens.
