People call it the 'crown jewel' of the Oregon State Parks system, and once you visit, you know why. Silver Falls State Park is the kind of standout scenic treasure that puts Oregon firmly onto the national - and international - stage. Its beauty, boundless recreational opportunities and historic presence keep it there. Nestled in the foothills of Oregon's Cascade Mountains, less than an hour east of the state capital of Salem, Oregon, the sprawling 9,200 acre property is the largest state park in Oregon, and one of the most popular.

That may be the most enviable photo I've seen, Mesa. Let me give you my address to send that digital file so I can really analyze it thoroughly for you. Eh? Yeah, right. Seriously though, we head to Phoenix in our motorhome for a few weeks every Feb or March pulling our Rubicon. I really need to make note of that road and make a point of taking a ride up that way. We always try to do a little mild 4-wheeling while we're there, but this one might require an overnight in either Sedona (which we love) or Flag.

Thanks! Of course, getting a photo such as yours takes a combination of a whole lot of things....like weather conditions, of course, which is mostly fortune, but also things like skill and equipment, on which I'm guessing I'm a few rungs down the ladder. Timing too, naturally. I am NOT going to promise I'll post a sample of what I shoot when I go, but I do occasionally hit the jackpot with timing.

Please do make the trip - I will be anxious to see your shots - you're right, a good photo is when a whole bunch of things come together at just the right time and place - such as happened with my shot - luck had more than a little to do with it. - - Dave

Mesa,
Have been through there several times. It is very beautiful just like your photo. If you are in a hurry don't go! As it was said the road is somewhat crude. It is my understanding that originally it was a bulldozer blade wide and was used to move livestock to and from the valley for summer grazing. My first trip was about 25 years ago--not my last. When crossing the country, I always made a stop at "Black Bart's Campground and Steakhouse" in Flagstaff their Steaks were cooked over oak and were delicious very different from being cooked over hickory. They used College students as servers and the servers also entertained their customers.

Been there (Black Bart's in Flag) - you're right about the steaks! Schnebly Hill is still (in many places), not much wider than a 'dozer blade) but it offers great views around every switchback. . . . Dave

Located in northern Arizona, Schnebly Hill Road is one of the most well-known and scenic routes in the Sedona area, with twists and turns, steep cliffs, wash out areas and great views from the pull off spots. It’s one of the premier drives in Arizona. This infamous road is tightly hairpinned and bumped, an exquisite winding mountain drive with sharp and blind curves and hairpin switchbacks leading the traveler over the mountains. Also known as F/S Road 153, it's a steep, twisty, unpaved and wonderfully scenic route that drops more than 2,000 feet from a wooded mesa into the wonderland of Sedona.

The drive is definitely worth it. There are many excellent photo opportunities here. Don’t forget your camera! Along the way, narrow turnouts provide an opportunity for travelers to marvel at the unfolding landscape. Schnebly Hill Vista, at 6,000 feet, overlooks the Verde Valley and Sedona below the summit, Steamboat Rock at the mouth of Oak Creek, and the mineral-rich Mingus Mountains to the west. The views from the back of Sedona are awesome, and the view from the top of the trail can't be beat. The overlook at the top of Schnebly Hill Road provides on of the most spectacular views in Arizona. It's especially good in the early morning when the sun is at your back, making it worthwhile to get up for sunrise and endure the very rough drive.

The road is 16.6 miles long, but when I made this photograph, the drive from beginning to Sedona took 5 hours! The journey begins just South of Flagstaff on I-17 and at the beginning it's on asphalt, but after the pavement ends you have about 2 miles before it gets really rough and there are few turn arounds. The road is dirt, steep and bumpy. People take cars and crossovers on it but the hubcaps and mufflers lying on the side of the road prove it is better to have a truck or off road type vehicle. The road is very bumpy and not meant for average cars. Not for the faint of heart. It’s somewhat like an amusement ride at times.

Great capture and p/p. Anybody who's spent any amount of time in farm country will relate to this. In my case it was visiting my Grandparent's 1/2 section in Kansas. There's just a different feel to farm country. It's quiet, except when storms come through. The land and, in winter or the heat of summer, the the temperature is what encompass you, along with whatever animals might be out in the pens. I can distinctly hear my Grandmother clucking to her chickens as she fed them. It was almost a loving cry....but then the next day she was liable to cut one's neck off and cook if for dinner. Such is farm life.

This def. needs to be printed large and framed. BTW...those must be the tracks from Grandpa's '60 Intl. pickup!!

Thanks, Steve - great post, your description of your visit to your Grandparent's farm in Kansas was perfect -as a kid, I lived on a farm in Oklahoma and my memories are similar to yours, except my Mom named every one of her chickens and turkeys and even guineas, but she couldn't kill or eat them because she loved them and had given them all names! Sweet memories . . .

I really like this. The oddity is the Christmas Season and the folks sitting on the lounge chairs in shorts and short sleeve shirts.

You nailed it, Bob. I've lived in Phoenix since 1992 and I still can't get used to wearing shorts and golfing shirts at Christmas time . . .
