Thanks to all who responded to my question regarding cropping of photos. Consensus here is that it is perfectly acceptable and can often enhance the original image. That is my opinion as well/ I think the cropping prohibition was probably most strongly embraced by the sites that were strictly "street" photographers. Seems a lot of folks who fancy themselves as "street photographers" assume they are the only arbiters of what is right or wrong in the genre.

Personally I believe that the only meaningful standard to observe is that a street photograph should honestly reflect the role of the human as he interacts with his environment.

Good shots . I like the humanity portrayed.

I appreciate the technical skill if not the images themselves. I think there are at least two levels to appreciate a good photo and one is the technical. The other is the ability to present an image with an honest emotion embedded in it and a presentation style that supports that idea. Anyway - Good show on the set of photos here. Well done.

Like your set of photos and would say that the person who suggest you shoot only in B&W may be misleading you a bit. A lot of street is shot in B&W but it should not be an exclusive format. Sometime color adds to the image and creates a better photo than B&W . The standard should be to ask yourself a question - Does the color add or distract from the photo as a whole. Often with images that involve human emotion the B&W format is best as it makes the viewer think about the underlying subject more. In the end its dependent on the nature of the particular scene and subject. The issue is not just black and white.

Like the moment chosen for this shot as it supports an implied story. Nicely framed and appreciate the strong foreground figure.

Like the red elements in the frame reinforcing each other and the wit of the man walking vs "no stopping" signage.

Like the shot with its implied story.

I see that you have done some work on the photo and I think it is an improvement but I still think it lacks a lot of what makes up a good photo. This is just my opinion and I have to agree that the B&W version if a better rendition of your scene but stand by my view that it is such a common presentation that it has no real interest to a viewer.

I am sorry but I would say you cannot post process a poor photograph into being a good one.
The photograph you show here is not an interesting one as there is no story or human interest , no creativity in presentation, and there is no evidence in technical skills having been applied during it taking.
I am no great street photog but I am just being candid and I hope you understand that. There is a lot of leeway on what is considered a good photo but I think most folks would agree with me on this one.

I have noticed a terrific bias against the use of cropping in a street photograph.
I cannot quite understand why cropping is prohibited from being a legitimate tool in processing just as much as any other. Can someone tell me?

To me street photos are best when they tell a story of some kind. A good street character caught candidly is great but it’s usually not as memorable. Try looking at some Vivian Maier photos for a lesson in what’s good street stuff.

I would not dismiss it automatically. I use an inexpensive program called Paint shop Pro and Can process photos just as competently as any of those who use Lightroom or Photoshop. Too often people seem to get influenced too much by what “everybody” is using. Try out the free software vs a trial Lightroom and see what results you get.

I had been doing all processing including all the items you mention using Corel Paint shop Pro and using it on jpeg from my now gone Rebel 5Ti. Don't understand why so many folks seem to think you can not do any extensive processing with Jpeg files and some app other than ps or lightroom. Guess I am not discriminating enough. Anyway I got a trial of a DxO photo program and it allowed me to recover my Raw pics just fine. Thanks for your comments

Nope not a troll. Had a Canon 5Ti and shot in raw and processed photos just fine. Got the 5D mark iv and learned after I got it that Adobe OS and lightroom could not handle the photos that were collected in Raw format. Seems like a major oversight but that's OK . To me it's not a significant difference. My photos are just as good as anyone shot and processed with Raw settings. Thanks for comments to you and all else. Great forum here.
