I wish you a speedy recovery. Glad the plain paper worked. Wishing your Pro 100 continues working well.

Thank you.

Friends:
Tuesday morning I got an early slot for elective surgery on my foot. So even though I'm healing well so far, it will be three weeks before I can walk to the basement where the printer is.
Let me update you on what I tried after I wrote. I cleaned the rollers and the print bed - no improvement. I was using 8.5 by11 heavy weight (320gms?) glossy photo grade paper, that, as you noticed, had curled in the humidity. I was doing test prints before making larger prints on a deadline for a charity auction. Since I don't know if the problem is the printer needs repair, or the curled heavy paper, I sent the image files to a print service.
Just before quitting for the night I put a piece of typing paper through and it printed with no skew at all.

So when I can walk I'll test your suggestions, and let you know. Meanwhile, I've put the curled paper under weights.
Thanks,
Steve

I’m having a problem with my pixma pro-100. It looks like the paper twists at the end of the print, the end of the image is shifted a quarter inch. The printer is quiet until it approaches the end of the paper then there’s a sound like the gears are grinding.
I’ve tried printing with different software and get the same results, so I’m pretty sure it’s the printer.
I’ve used the print head alignment function, but it doesn’t seem to help.
If you look at the top of the print you can see what I mean.
Any thoughts?

I just bought my kid ten rolls of CatLabs x 320 b/w 35mm 36 for ~$79 with shipping. They sell 120 at the same price.
Good luck and good shooting

I always found it easier to pop the memory card out of the camera (K-1 & K-5), and import the files from the card. It appears to be faster, too.

Hope this works for you,
Steve

Thanks, folks. Your input has helped. My thoughts are: as several of you have pointed out, my full-frame Pentax with 36mp is more than sufficient for the max pint size I can make (yes, you're right it's 13x19, not 13x16); the Fuji is too expensive; and like maciej, after a few months I'd probably go back to the DSLR in the first place.
So, thank you all very much,
Steve

I'm considering buying a medium format digital camera. The 100s creates files that are 100mb, the 645 makes files that are 52mb. My largest prints at home are 13x16, so even with cropping both should work. I have the disk space and the RAM to handle the large file size, so that's not an issue. Affinity says their software can handle the large file size, too.
So, do you think the 50% premium for the 100S is worth it? Is the larger file that much of a difference in terms of detail, quality? Any thoughts on the cameras themselves?
Thanks for your thoughts.

On PC or Mac you can use Libre Office which allows you to edit/create PDFs. It also reads and writes all Microsoft Office files. It is free, although they request a donation. https://www.libreoffice.org/download

I believe they are ventilators for a drainage system, similar to the vent stack at the top of your house, to ventilate and depressurize your sewage line.

Both SiverFast and Vuescan (www.silverfast.com,www.hamrick.com) will let you try their software for free. Both will indicate whether they support your scanner, though they probably do. Personally, I found Vuescan's workflow to be preferable.

That's exciting news. Do they have software for the 9000?

I think so. They have a list of 80 some-odd scanners they support.

Bad news! Usually, if the offending particles are simply dust and dirt that live on the surface of negatives and somehow become embedded are removable by the detergent action and emulsion softening of Photo-Flo. May I suggest, as an experiment on one not-so-important negative, you re-do the procedure but with an extended time- 5 to 10 minutes is the solution and more aggressive rubbing.

As for "archival" envelopes and sleeves- I have had some issues. Some glassine envelopes were labelled as archival that were not. I don; know whether it was the material itself of the glue or adhesive used to construct the envelopes and/or the storage conditions. There was severe adhesions to the negatives, however, I was able to dislodge the negatives with the soaking procedure but there was another permanent damage other than spots, rather Moiré-like patterns. Some of this was somewhat remedied by printing the negatives WET in a glassless enlarger carrier with a cold-light source.

At one time, I discussed this with a film archivist who mentioned that residual chemicals in the film can act as a solvent and cause this kind of adhesion and subsequent damage. High relative humidity accelerates the reaction.

I get into this stuff because at my studio we do quite a volume of photo-restoration for museums and archives that don't have in-house technicians who are familiar with photographic restoration as opposed to the restoration of paintings, etc. Now and again we get the damaged and dirty film, glass plates, and lantern slides where there is interest in the historical content of the image and restoration is need just to clarify the details. Many of the artifacts are too fragile or will simply disolve if soaked. Others are beyond cleaning so out come the airbrush and the cloning tool on the computer. Not fun!

I have found a solution- my lovely wife loves cloning out spots. She is a fastidious housekeeper, organizer, etc. You can perform open-heart surgery in our kitchen!
Bad news! Usually, if the offending particles are... (show quote)

Ah.

A mechanical detail: my film is cut into six frame strips. I was able to get the dry onto a ss spiral reel for the water wash and the initial dip in photo-flo. To give them a good rub, I removed them from the reel. What do you do with them for the second sluice in Photo-flo? I used a 4x5 rubber tank, but was worried about an edge catching on the emulsion of another negative. And how do you hang them to dry?

As to your lovely wife: congratulations. I dated a Canadian in the late sixties..... I'll find the negatives of her, eventually.

Just an adenda to the conversation:

Negatives from 1971 stored in Agfa glassine sleeves are scanning clean.

Yes, thanks, that's what I use. For me it works better than Silverfast.
