The funny thing, is that those of us who are photographers (amateur or prof), can’t hardly take a snapshot…your sense of artistic capabilities is always there, even for the quickest candid shot.

I’ve had this discussion before, and then I don’t use the word picture versus photograph. I use the word snapshot versus photograph. Where a snapshot is simply hold the camera up take a picture without any regard to lighting or composition. snapshots being Candid for the most part. Candid for the most part, very brief discussion needed.

Then go into your conversation about taking a picture or a photograph, where you have the students learn about proper composition for a nice photograph, to include not only composition but lighting. lighting plays such a valid part in what people do when taking pictures.

Example, my granddaughter was going to shoot a photo of me and the grandkids the other day just outside of a restaurant, we were actually in the foyer. Her first attempted try, was going to put us right in front of the window. I stopped her and position is on the other side with the light not behind us, something as simple as that, and teaching the young ones to observe what they see in the other photographs, taken and trying to replicate the artistic point of photography

I’m on 3rd Canon DSLR.
I agree it seems the majority of the world shoots Nikon. I actually got my start using Olympus cameras, but since they were rather the underdog (but I really like them) I switch to Canon have more of a “amateur professional” line of photography equipment.

Im currently running the 6D, I could never afford cannons the top line equipment, the ones I’ve had in the past, currently the 6D, before that the 7D before that the 20D. Being that buying into a particular brand is a true investment, once you go there, you’re most likely not going to jump lines due to the cost of the lenses, accessories etc.

I’ve only done a few paid photography jobs, which has been three weddings so far. That’s about the extent of what I really like to do with photography. I’m more of an outdoor, landscape, abstract type of photographer. I love the mountains, so end up spending a lot of my time shooting some well-known areas, national parks, etc.

Just like digital took over film, Mirrorless will take over the traditional pentaprism and shutter. It’s simply just a matter of time. And just like the current transition we’re in, there still diehards who still shoot film. It’s all in the interest of advancing technology.

Personally, having my 7D, I purchased ALL EF lenses other than what came with the camera - even the L series 100-400 I have now. I wanted the expandabiity that the EF line offered me when I up-purchased to a FF (which I have), running a 6D now.

Backup software by any manufacturer isn’t a good idea, since most use proprietary software to restore the files. Granted, they all use some sort of compression (bad idea in my mind). If you get a new system, or update part of the software, chances of not getting your precious data is at risk. I ALWAYS due simple ‘flat file’ backups, copying the full-res photos to another medium. My recommendation is to copy the files to a local drive (portable, etc), but then send the files to some sort of cloud service. The cloud service is another backup, BUT also makes it so you can view the files from just about anywhere. for added protection, you can make another off-site backup to another drive and keep in a safe deposit box, or something like that, in case your drive is ever stolen, or house-fire, or anything else catastrophic.

My 2 cents. If you can’t tell I’ve been burned by backup software.

I totally agree, just like digital was replacement for film, mirrorless will be the replacement for the Pentaprism. It’s just a matter of time… For me I’m just about 60 so I don’t plan on investing in the future of enthusiast photography. I’ll keep what I have which is a Canon 6D, and several nice lenses.

Whenever in that part of the country I try and head up towards the redwoods. But, with your timeline you won’t have time to go where I would probably go up through Richardsons Grove and Humbolt. Another great alternative is to travel from San Francisco up Highway one checking out Point Reyes National Seashore and Bodega Bay (filming location of Hitchcock‘s “The Birds“). Also, if you can try and hit it towards sunset as you can get some really beautiful shots of sunset off of the Pacific also, if you can try and hit it towards sunset as you can get some really beautiful shots of sunset off of the Pacific.
Most of all, have fun!

I used Dale labs for a long time. they basically turn excess cinematic film into 35mm slide film. Don't know if they still do it, but they used to give a replacement roll whenever you turned one in for processing.
