I went to a 20MB HD at home in the mid 80s. thought I'd never fill that.
I probably replaced the computer before I filled it.

I did the same thing. I paid AUD$750 (though the first IBM 5MB was AUD$5,000 so that was relatively cheap).

So at AUD$750 for 20MB that's AUD$37.50/MB

At that price a 4TB HDD would cost a staggering AUD$157,286,400...in fact they cost AUD$149 (and that's in today's dollars) or 3.552436828613281e-5 /MB.

These are still some bargains to be had!

I found the Sigma to be a solid performer.

Taken from the Swan Valley bridge. I was tempted to turn up the color but decided muted colors were better.

Yes you’ve certainly shown great restraint here...

I find a sharp edge in the photo. I then take the photo and load it into a numeric array in Python using luminance values. Find the sharp edge in the photo and select a sequence of points that goes over that edge. I then take the first derivative of the numbers going across the edge which should yield a peak (could be either positive or negative). I fit the peak to a Gaussian curve to find the width of the curve. A sharp edge will have a curve with a narrow width. Tack sharp would be a width close to 1.0 (the pixel spacing).

Hilarious! :-)

The OP has stated that he gets three free cleanings over a three year warranty. Why not get a cleaning at the end of every year? They’re free.

As usual the most sensible answer gets overlooked.

But none of you have answered the question which was "Would you go ahead with your surgery?"

For me, the answer is unequivocally yes because we've been told to "listen to the experts".

lightyear: Even more reason to believe me when I say I don't think it can be done (a self repair)

If you want to take the risk, buy a lower-priced grey market product. I would not.

There will always be risk takers and those that only bet on a sure thing and pay more. The secret is to weigh up the risks and balance them against the rewards. I don't see buying grey differs much to buying s/h, in fact it's probably safer. Cameras are an inherently reliable device in my experience. Over the past few years I have bought and sold in excess of 100 cameras and lenses, the majority being Nikon, and only had one failure (coincidentally a Nikon kit lens with an intermittent auto-focus problem).

So I have no problem taking the risk.

To answer another question, is it possible to fix a lens yourself? Well I pulled my failed lens apart and although I found the problem I wasn't able to get it back together (and I consider myself pretty handy with tools) so I think not.

The full frame DSLR is not on the road to failure but possibly on the path of extinction. . . .

So why do all the pros still use them?

Hahahaha! Hilarious! You're doing exactly what you're advising others not to do. Who's the troll now eh?

To be fair I never asked for anyone's opinion or advice but there are plenty who want to offer it anyway :-). Your frequently demonstrated inability to understand plain English perhaps excuses you (though your juvenile attempt at humour is another story).

I did the experiment for my own edification and decided to share it here in case anyone else was curious. There were some worthwhile contributions to the discussion but for the majority I'd suggest it was a case of casting pearls before swine...

Re your comparison points --#3 under Nikon , Shouldn't that be under Fuji? Nikon Long telephotos are superb but they are multiples of the cost of the Fuji lenses.

I could be wrong but I don't think Fujinon actually make long X-system lenses so I chose a lens that could be fairly compared. I use a Sigma 150-600mm so I compared that to a Fuji 100-400mm. The Sigma cost me $700 used and the cheapest used 100-400mm I could find on eBay was $1900. New they are $2500 (AUD)
