I have a DX Nikon and have been using Nikon SLR and DSLR since 1970 and I have four Nikon DX lenses so I am sticking with Nikon and the SLR style. I want to upgrade my D7100 but I am confused about the options. I like the idea of transfer of images by Blue Tooth. I do not sell my work but I am particular about quality of my images. Budget is not a huge issue; under $2,000. Recommended body?

I was in exactly the same situation (well actually monkeys plus birds). I have a Nikon DX body 7100 but there are more recent versions. Here is a lens alternative: rent a very long lens that would be far above your price point to buy. I used BorrowLeneses.com (they are not paying me for the plug!) You get to work with a $1,000+ lens for a few hundred. At least check out this option; it might work for you.

Wow! I guess I was being unrealistic with $120.

Hey don't deny me that 0.1! It is 6.1 megapixels. I was hoping for around $120. Not looking to make a killing here.

I shoot these days with a D7100 and am very happy with it. I have an old D70 with a nice 18-55 Nikkor lens. I decided I don't need it as a backup anymore and am getting ready to either sell it or donate it to a charitable program that might put it to good use. My problem is that whenever I shoot on automatic the flash pops up and fires off no matter how bright the lighting is. Any idea what the problem might be? Also, how would you value the body plus lens, plus strap, plus lens hood plus 4G memory card and all the chargers and cables? Don't want to rip anybody off but I would be happy to rip off the IRS if I donate it and take a write-off (don't quote me on that). Thanks in advance.

I am horrible with computers and basically anything IT. Old school: got my first Nikon F in 1972. For me there is no debate because my Nikon D7100 has two memory card slots and I have the camera set to take every shot in JPEG and raw. I imagine many of us on this forum have the same ability.

I think you are blaming the photographer when you should be blaming the driver/guide. It was a very stupid move. I had drivers get us very close to elephants and lions in the Maasi Mara in Kenya but they knew what they were doing.

Do you have VR on your lenses? I think there are few situations where a 1.4 or 1.2 would be necessary. These days the digitals have so many ways to compensate. My first Nikon was an F and it came with a 2.0 and I've never had anything wider than that. On the other hand, even as a self-described amateur, if you've got lots of money to burn a 1.2 would be fun to play with.

I had a great experience with borrowlenses.com Make sure you add the optional insurance if the lens is going to be at risk. Also, if it an extreme zoom -- like up to 500 mm -- rent it a few days early to get used to it.

"I took to much photo equipment on my bucket list trip," said no photographer ever! Not trolling here, seriously, bring everything you've got and you won't regret it.

I went to the Maasi Mara in Western Kenya a few years back. My best tip is that if you don't own a really long telephoto or zoom and can't afford the one you want you can always rent one. Be sure to get the insurance.

Good point about changing lenses as seldom as possible. The Maasi Mara does get dusty.

It has been eight years since I was in the Maasi Mara and I still have fond memories. You will want the longest lens you can get. The 500 at a minimum. If this is a once in a lifetime trip I would even recommend renting something longer. P.S. the Maasi are happy to pose for pictures but expect a generous tip. American dollars are welcome.

I vote for the Nikon people. Bought my first Nikon in 1970 and never lost a shot due to mechanical failure. If I still had it, the 50 mm f2.0 that came with the Nikkormat body would still fit my current Nikons.
