I am relatively new to digital photography and post processing. It is clear to me that my old laptop pc is not up to the task. The computer may hang up or take very long periods of time to download images from the camera, or do any post processing. I am now convinced I need a computer with much more RAM (currently 4 GB) and perhaps a better cpu. The restriction I s that I am trying to get by on a limited budget. I would value suggestions and advice.

4 Gb RAM is the problem. With Windows, you probably only have 50% remaining due to OS overhead. Right click on the task bar, and choose Task Manager, then go to the performance tab and select Resource Monitor. You will see a graph of physical memory to let you know how much RAM is available for applications.

Go to www.crucial.com, enter the model # of your laptop and they will tell you the max RAM your mainboard should support. There is also an on line app that will perform the same function. Whatever the Max is, upgrade to that.

Modern applications have such a heavy memory overload these days.

The Crucial web site didn't offer a match based on the info I have. I meant 4 GB but you all assumed it. I am running Windows 10 and the CPU is AMD-A8-6410 I don't know what that translates to in Intel chips. It does sound like lack of memory is likely to be a major source of the problem.

I have a lap top that is several years old and has 4 meg ram and serves most purposes reasonably well. I have been trying to do some basic things with photos using Nikon software including Capture NX-D, View NX-I and Transfer 2. The problem I have is that they keep crashing or otherwise freezing up in mid task. I end up having to shut them down and restart or restart the computer and hope that I can complete a task. Sometimes something as simple as getting the software to take the pictures from the camera to a file on the drive which by the way has plenty of space.

Sometimes if I am trying to convert a raw to jpg it takes an inordinately long time or just hangs.

Do I need to try different software, get a new computer or something I haven't thought of?

P.S. ...and correct me if I'm wrong, but it's the native 12 bit NEF conversion for Nikon's brainstorm of a RAW and very much unlike 14 bit.

I can't speak for other models but on my D7100 there is a menu option to record raw NEF files in 12 or 14 bit formats.

The manual indicates that 14 bit results in a larger file with more color data.

I think trying to find free and easy is not going to work out. There is some free software including Nikon's Capture Nx-D and VewNXi as well as GIMP. As far as I can tell any software that will accomplish what you want will take time and effort to learn. Then again you may have a lot to learn about photography too. That learning process can be slow or fast depending on many variables and can be very enjoyable and satisfying if you have a healthy attitude.

I hesitate to comment on others pictures when I am often not confident that I could do better. I agree with Linda that the picture seems to lack a focal interest and that it seems too dark. Even for rainy day it seems perhaps under exposed.

I don't think snapbridge is compatible with the D7110

Nikon makes both a remote release cord and a wireless remote control and either one should be able to accomplish what you want. There are also non Nikon products that do the same thing. They may be less expensive although the Nikon products are not to costly. I found a Nikon ML-L3 wireless that works with the D7100 for under $18 on Amazon and the wired MC-DC2 for $36

I am your age and like you recently got into digital photography. I am working on learning post processing and like you wanted to save money if possible. I use the Nikon programs View-NXi and Capture NXD. I am also working on learning Gimp, and found a cheap book that offers a set of lessons.

As for learning curves, I would point out that the term is used incorrectly. A steep learning curve would be associated with rapid learning and behavior change. A long involved learning process would produce a flat learning curve. The term comes from automated plots of responses in psychology learning experiments.

Others have speculated here that this is a rebranded Samyang. I have an 8mm f/3.5 fisheye made by Samyang and branded as Rokinon. I originally got it for my D5000 and have graduated it to my D7100. It is manual focus but otherwise fully compatible with both cameras in aperture priority and shutter priority modes. It cost less than $300 a few years ago. Are you sure the lens you're getting is truly non-CPU? Sounds otherwise like they could be the same lens.

I don't have it yet but will soon. As far as I can tell reading the description it will work with manual or aperture priority but not shutter priority. I know it is branded Vivitar but I don't know if it is made by someone else. I have seen adds for similar lenses that do say they have a chip.

This OP question is the reason all photographers should first learn how to use a 4x5" View Camera or at a minimum a film 35mm camera and then at least one other format before delving into the universe of digital. Then all this nonsense confusion about FX vs DX or Full Frame vs APS-C would not exist. Also it might have helped if they never came up with any formats smaller than 24x35mm. But there I understand the cost of the sensors drove the market. 24x36mm seems huge for digital with 35mm film being tiny compared to 120, 4x5", 5x7", 8x10", 11x14", etc. film sizes. No one got confused back then as we never thought about Crop Factors. A focal length is a focal length. Photographers knew what lens did what on which camera. I at least never found it confusing, but then I only worked with a few formats, 35mm, 6x6cm, 6x7cm, 4x5", and 8x10".

It seems to me that someone new to photography will be best off learning what lens, camera, or other equipment, post processing software etc, produce what effects and then learn how to get what they want in the way of images. For those of us who have had experience with film in various formats the same really applies.
Many years ago I went to a Nikon school. It was a day in an auditorium with a couple of teachers. I remember well some of the beautiful images that they showed that had been taken with point and shoot cameras and how they carefully pointed out how much can be accomplished with modest I equipment.
When I recently got my first digital SLR, I bought Nikon 7100. I made a choice based on my budget, a desire to be able to use some lenses I had from my Nikon film camera, and wanting to have the a camera that would have capacity to take pictures I can enjoy. I would love to have the option of going to a higher end camera but can't justify the expense. After some study and reading helpful posts here I have a much better grip on things like the FX vs DX distinction.
