Nothing better to do this afternoon and found myself watching a number of Youtube videos on Nimh batteries. I have been using Eneloops for years and have some that are still going strong 8 or 9 years later. On the other hand, there were some really good reviews of Amazon's own brand (one reviewer even suggested that they may be made by Panasonic, same folds who make Eneloops.)

Amazon brand is also subsantially cheaper.

So I am curious: anybody using the Amazon Nimh AA batteries?

Any opinions o how they compare to Eneloops?

I seem to remember being advised that electronic flash units had to had to be "fired up" regularly if they were not being used to prevent the capacitors from "deforming." I have no idea of what that means ir of it is necessary, but I do try to make sure that units that have not been used for a few months are fitted with fresh batteries and turned on for an hour or so.

Is this necessary or just some antiquated superstition?

I am curious if down loading via card reader or direct connection makes any differences. I own a “universal” type card reader (multi slots for different sized cards) and a simple cordless one that plugs directly into the computer USB port and just reads SD cards. I have also used a cord to connect my camera directly to the computer to download.

My question: will any of these make any difference in image quality or anything else? Is there any reason to use one method of downloading versus another? I should probably mention that just about all my pro work is shot on Jpeg format, mostly events and never any video. A single job rarely fills a 16gb card. Thanks!

X-10 vs. X-30?

For years my 'carry around' camera was an X-10. My travel outfit was a pair of them and I have always been happy with the results. A couple of years ago one of then finally gave out. I tried replacing it with an X-100s, but after a year, I still don't feel comfortable with that camera and I will probably end up selling it.

Anyway, my current “problem” is whether to pick up another X-10 (so I have a back-up camera for travel) or to try an X-30. Seems I get the same lens and same sensor either way and the X-30 is a bit larger and most listings are a few bucks more than for the X-10.

If anyone has owned and used both, your suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Film is dead? B&W is dead? Add 4/3? There are still millions of film shooters out there along with the more esoteric folks who make their own paper, make salt prints and calotypes and tintypes to name just a few 'dead' processes. Check out prices on vintage large format equipment including wooden view cameras and 4x5 press cameras.

Assuming the OP is of legal age, m 4/3 will out live him.

I am using Olympus M4/3 and there is at least one YouTube video of the Youngnou units made for Canon not working with this line. I can't tell from the video of this was a fluke or equipment incompatibility, but I have been using Canon sync cords with no problems. Since I just have occasional need for a radio tripper, I do want to go with an inexpensive line that would work. Any thoughts on Godex/Youngnou compatibility with Olympus M4/3?

Most of my pro work is at events, usually with a single light, corded off the camera. A couple of years ago I switched to Olympus M4/3. Recently I have been in a few situations where it would have been great to have a second light that I could trigger remotely, but only occasionally, using a radio trigger. Some shots would be just that remote light, not the on-camera one. Being totally 'old school,' I prefer working totally manually (after 50+ years, it is a hard to habit to break!). So what I think would be the simplest set-up would be a transmitter on camera and 2 receivers (or 3 transceivers). This is a set-up that I would only use on a few jobs, so I am hoping to avoid buying into one of the expensive lines of triggers. So, any recommendations?

(and as always, my thanks in advance for any advice!)

Price: $ 185.00!

Used for less than a year: a short time later, I switched to another camera system. Now I have this great outfit that I can no longer use; at least I can not use the automatic features that I wanted when I bought it. OK, poor planning: my loss………! Anyway, the Nissin outfit has not been used all that much and it is a great deal for someone who can use it.

These are an actual shots of the Nissin Strobe and Accessories offered here, not a stock shots or something copied from another source.

I am in New York City, Downtown Manhattan for local pick-up. Otherwise, please add $12.00 for shipping to the Continental USA. If you are someplace else, please contact me for shipping costs. I accept PayPal (as transfer), US Postal MO, Cash, whatever.......

I am a working pro and the majority of my work is events, mostly corporate. I never shoot video, sports type action or rapid sequences and all photos are shot Jpeg. Just about everything I shoot is used on line and very, very rarely am I asked for prints. When that happens, it is usually for a single 8x10 for somebody's ego wall.

When I switched to digital about 15 years ago, my dealer recommended Sandisk CF cards so I used them. Now that I am using SD cards, I have pretty much used those and Kingston, avoiding 'off'' brands. I fond that 16 GB is enough for my jobs (and personal use). I have only had one card go bad (a Sandisk) and after what seemed like an overly dragged out e-mail exchange, it was replaced. Hey, once in 15 years and I probably shouldn't complain. I have also made it a point to replace a couple of cards every year and 'retire' the older ones.

So today I stopped by my local shop (one of the big NYC 'names' – I am fortunate that way!) to pick up a few replacements. So first off,it seems like the selection of SD cards has increased dramatically. As has the range of prices. Some 16 GB are offered with a few dollars difference ny the same maker, some with a range of lots of dollars My question is basically which cards do I need? Is there any advantage, given my usage, to buying the more expensive cards?

As always, my thanks in advance for any advice!

Is there any advantage to saving a jpeg image as a TIFF? About 99% of my professional work is used solely on line and is never printed. In fact just about the only printing I have done are occasional vacation/personal snapshots with a rare 8x10 or 11x14 as a gift. So far, I only shoot jpegs.

Further more, most of my pro work is in the corporate field and is pretty much one -off: used for a single occasion and done. I keep it all on file, in case a client needs future copies. I seem to remember being told to save everything in TIFF format, but so far, have not seen any reason to do so.

Am I missing something here?

So far I have resisted the temptation to go 'cordless' and have been happy enough using sync cords on my pro equipment. Since picking up the X-100s, I have been playing with some accessories and wanted to try a radio trigger. I would be using it with a small light, (and I seem to have a box full of these)on manual settings, so I won't need any fancy controls, just triggering the light from no more than a few feet away.

Since this is just something to fool around with, I'd like to keep the cost down to as little as possible. Scrolling through eBay turned up lots, all totally unfamiliar. So, any suggestions? Thanks!
