I shoot a lot of portraits and product, mainly on a tripod. I have a Pro Media Gear L bracket. It had the Arca Swiss dovetail on both sides. It fits my camera like a glove, and still allows access to the battery and all the ports. Quick switch of shooting modes. Is a good L bracket expensive yes. But then you get what you pay for in photography.

I'm not a professional photographer... was a hobby way back. I spent most of my teenage years in a darkroom and still haven't recovered. I don't care what the 'area' of interest is; I admire fine craft. As far as Adams goes, I think a couple of his photos can be improved on for composition, but generally he's great for that (I'm not trying to raise any hackles). What I admired about him (from 50 year memory) was the technical excellence of his photos.

I as well do not understand the undercurrent of disrespect of his craft. When i saw is large prints on display I was in total awe! The fine detail, expressions, and quality of the large prints were "OMG"

Probably the greatest portrait photographer of all times was Karsh of Ottawa if one judges by the celebrates who flocked to him. Originally dubbed the "Pore photographer" because of the detail he showed from his studio 8x10 and Ektar lens and when traveling to England, his Graphic View Camera. This post is a discussion of his work and methods, not a posed question.

In the late 1970ies his work was on display at the Science and Industry Museum in Chicago. I spent couple of hours studying his work. He truly a master at this art.

My first "Real Camera" was this twin lens reflex given to my Uncle in 1968. He purchased it used in 1962. I still shoot B&W film on occasion.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo R1800 photo printer whose is at EOL now. What do visitors on this site recommend as a good photo printer for 13”x 19” max size photos?

Using a Canon Pro-100 for a number of years now. The prints are bright and brilliant. Like any printer to get the best results you must use printer profiles when printing. As far as the high cost of ink I have learned to refill my cartridges'. I have been buying ink from Precision Colors. https://www.precisioncolors.com/
They have all the instructions and tools needed on their website.

It drops the price from $15. a cartridge to less that $2.00 each. The ink matched the oe canon ink. I use their printer profiles through photoshop or lightroom. The prints are amazing.

I took the digital plunge 13 years ago with a Canon 20d. In the last couple of years I shot a few rolls of Tri-X 120 and had it developed and scanned. I still love a well done full tonal range B&W print from film. That said I kept an old Minolta twin lens 120 camera. I sold my Canon F1 system with prime with multiple prime lens at a KEH & Helix camera event. Got a lot more for the system than I expected. Going to buy a Sigma 85MM 1.4 lens for my 5DMKIV.

Yesterday I was processing some photos and noticed a tiny black dot that appeared in the same spot on all my photos with a light background. But when I opened the spot removal mask, I couldn’t find it! Whaat!? I moved on to other images in the file and resolved to do some PS later. Closed out of LR. Went to web surf and there was the spot again! Note to self, wipe the screen...!

LMAO ,been there too many times!

I have a new ssd drive arriving today for my pc. Currently everything runs off he 16 me ram and the pcs 1T hard drive. It is my intention to use the ssd for all photo processing and active image storage.
After I install the ssd, should I move the Lr and PS (all adobe stuff) to the ssd so hat storage and programs are on the same faster drive?

If there is a thread about this process please point it out.

Thanks
Bill

Bill, Are you trying to speed up the programs loading? Or is the concern the time it it takes in Lightroom moving from one image to the next one. The few seconds it take for the image to load/sharpen?

I have an 2017 27Ä iMac, Pro 100 printer and use xrite Studio. I also used the Datacolor but noticed it had too warm colors, especially distracting for printing B/W. Did a few prints this weekend and still some came out slightly darker than monitor, frustrating. Use Red River paper and their ICC profiles, thinking itäs probably the inks as I use third party inks. Will order canons next time!

I use 3 party ink from precision ink.https://www.precisioncolors.com/PC42cref.html. They provide profiles for red river paper using their ink. If you follow all his directions on the web site you will be very happy.

I have an early 2012 27” iMac and am looking for a recommendation for a monitor calibration tool. I use a canon pro 100 to print with.
Thanks for your help

Since you mentioned using the Canon Pro 100 printer, are you trying to get your prints to match the monitor as well? Calibrating your monitor will give you colors and density.

If are looking for your printer to print to match your monitor that will require the use of ICC printer profiles.
I use the color munki unit from X-rite. It will profile your monitor and your printer match. I use a Canon Pro 100. If i can be of any help you are welcome to message me.

Does anyone know of a good quality photo printer that used "bulk" or large tank ink containers. I now only use OEM inks, having ruined several printers in the past with compatible cartridges.

I now use a Canon MX 922 for everyday photo prints and a Canon Pro 100 for "exhibition" grade prints. Both of these printers have good specs for photo work but they do drink a lot of ink

I can recommend from very good experience this company for your Pro 100.

https://www.precisioncolors.com/PC42.html

I have been refilling my canon cartridges with their ink for a few years now. They sell everything you need to refill your ink. Instructions on their web site as well. Their ink does match the canon ink. They also have printer profiles you can download. I can tell you I have calibrate my monitor and when I use their ink and printer profiles the prints match my screen. By refilling my cost is less than $2. per cartridge.

I have tried the ciss in systems from another company with my Epson 1430 printer. They worked for a while the nothing but problems.

If you have any questions you can send me a personal message on this site. Happy to help

I have 4 yo pro 100. It's the best printer I have ever owned. A few months ago one color stopped working. Test pattern showed no ink from one nozzel. I called Cannon. They said it sounds like a bad circuit in the print head. They sent me a replacement at no charge. Best customer service ever!

[quote=Sark17]Hello! I am new to shooting RAW and am getting more confused by the day. I have a professional photographer friend who tells me I HAVE to shoot in raw on an upcoming trip to Africa (I leave Friday!) So I started shooting raw to practice using my dogs. I figured it would be fairly straight forward - I was very wrong. I use a Canon EOS R with various lenses.

In the first screen shot you can see the JPG (right) compared to the RAW photo (left). The Raw photo is super grainy. The JPG is fine. I didn't edit any of these or even try for any good composition, just wanted to practice working with RAW and getting them off of my card - which has also proven to be complicated.

So, my questions - 1) why are my RAW photos much more grainy than JPG? I realize ISO is a bit high in this specific photo, but even when it's not at all, I get the same result. 2) what is the most straightforward way to get to get a raw file off of an SD card and actually be able to do anything with it on a Mac? Lastly, I am probably just going to shoot Large JPG to save myself the panic of ruining something trying to use RAW if I can't figure this out...

I am currently using a DNG converter to get them to Lightroom, then I am not totally sure what to do with them after that, I couldn't even figure out how to save it to post it here as an example as I did with the JPEG.

I did not read through allthe responses, so I may repeating

I use adobe DNG converter. It is a free download. Which ever one you make sure you are setting to convert at the full file size. Perhaps you are coverting to a small size DNG and losing quality?

In lightroom Develope module set the profile to camera standard. This is a good startingpoint to match the Jpg.

If you have questions you can pm me

Jeff
