Partly this depends on which app you use for downloading and editing your photos. Apples Photos for instance stores the original photos in a library. You can search for these and then copy to an external drive - a bit time consuming. Time Machine is very very good for backing up your whole OS including whichever apps you use and your photos. Its benefit is in restoring everything when you change to a new machine.

Thank you JohnR!

Thank you ALL for the information. I am currently sorting through all the excellent responses to decide which method to use. It will be the most uncomplicated route given my habit of quitting when things get too complicated. The photos are all in my Iphoto library and like I probably mentioned too tangled up with duplicates, raw, and jpeg both. Again, thanks SO MUCH! I will update how it went when I get the project of getting the photos organized, duplicates deleted, and off my computer, in case anyone is curious.

Hello - I am looking for an external device to store photographs that are downloaded on my computer. I currently have a Macbook and a desktop Mac and have at least 40,000 photos total between both computers, many of them are doubles. I would like to get them organized and off the computers because they take up so much space and also I want them organized according to date so I can find what I am looking for. I would purchase 2 devices if necessary but I want to find a highly recommended device for obvious reasons. If anyone can recommend anything, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I love these photos. They are all beautiful and make me wish I had a decent camera to go out and try my hand at it. Thanks for posting.

Hello you! Not quite 70 here. Planning my next camera purchase soon. I started with a nikkormat, then Nikon F2 then Nikon D70. I’ve done photography professionally, as art, for my family memories and now I have thousands of film prints and 25,000 digital photos to do something with. I’ll figure it out how to complete what I started so to share them. It’s ok but I want an easier and lighter camera now. Good luck. You will really enjoy photography, I can tell. And thank you for your service.

You did an awesome job of removing what you didn't like about the photograph. That said - I prefer the photo with the poles.

It's just real life without the plastic surgery.

Thanks for all the great information. I will check into everything that was posted. Her interest in photography deserves to be nurtured. If her mama doesn't get the right gear, grandma will.

My granddaughter loves photography and wants a camera for Christmas. Is $ 150.00 enough to get her a starter camera? What are some good ones? I am posting her photographs here. Thank you.

Hi everyone. I am leaving the first week in April for a vacation of a lifetime. For those who know the story of “Mutiny On The Bounty” I am going the visit Pitcairn Island and stay with the descendants of the Mutineers of the HMS Bounty. I have made two trips there in the past and became very good friends with the 51 people left on the island. If you wish to see the pictures I have taken on the island and of the Bounty underwater you can see them here http://therougephotographer.smugmug.com/

My question is I have been entrusted with the photographs taken on the island going back to the 1890’s. I would like to make a coffee table book of the photos that would be sold with the proceeds going back to Pitcairn. There has been a lot written about the Bounty and Pitcairn, I would like to publish a book of primarily photos with captions. I have about 1700 pictures from 1897 through the 1960’s. I know I will have to eliminate some. Can anyone guide me to a publisher that can put this together? I am looking for a company that will compliment photographs with glossy paper and can print hundreds of copies. Am I crazy? Will these books sell? It is a major part of Maritime history. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Day 64 :) I had a request for today's challenge to be Humor in Photography. So whether it's something someone else did,
something funny you set up and photographed, funny signs, funny looking people and pets, or something you photoshopped,
anything you think is humorous we want to see it. I actually had to go to the archives for a couple of these .. aparently I
photograph everything but humor. Here are a few examples to get us started (such as they are)

Check out Central Camera. It is a very old store right in the Loop and close to everything. The place has a lot of character, meaning it is old. Their website does not do the store justice. They do stock darn near everything. Here is the Google map.

Calumet and Helix are also good, but really require a car, they do have free parking lots.

Go to Central Camera. It really is a cool place. Lots of new and old crammed into an ancient storefront. They do keep current and over the years I have seen them have new digital things that Helix and Calumet have not stocked yet.

The bar next door is a hang out for old men and Art students. The Art Institute is one block away and always has a great photo exhibit in the basement.

Lots of photo opportunities in Millennium Park and under the El.
