I have not been on this site since January 19th, on the morning of January 20th we almost lost 6 members of our family, 4 to a fire and 2 to a vehicle accident.
Our 10 year old granddaughter and family adopted a kitten (SAGE) on Christmas eve.
On January 20th Sage kept clawing and swatting my granddaughters face at 5:30 in the morning, our granddaughter woke up and was VERY hot, she got down from her loft bed, opened her door and got some cool air, then she went back to bed, turned a fan on and played on her phone, around 6:20 it smelt like pizza burning, so she got up again, opened and looked out her door to see why there was pizza burning and saw flames on a chair in the far family room. She woke up her step-dad, mom, and younger brother and they escaped from the tragic fire of their home. they were within seconds of perishing in the fire. When the front door was opened the fire basically exploded and the windows blew out. Luckily the keys were in the vehicles and so they had a place to escape to and get away from the house.
The fire was electrical, from by the meter and traveled up the wall and was mainly in the attic, the smoke alarms did not go off in time because the fire was in the attic.
They lost everything, but what they had on, which was shorts and t shirts, no socks, shoes, coats, etc. A local organization in a town nearby that has a store type place opened up (while the fire was still being fought) and family members took the children to that town and got bags and bags of everything all 4 of them needed.
Sage and 2 hamsters did not survive the fire. 2 dogs and a cat survived. They are all living at our house for now.
We had a burial in our pet cemetery at our farmstead for Hero Sage on the 24th, there were about 40 people that attended!
Our fire department and the other small town fire department are all volunteers, the response from both departments was phenomenal. It was about 15 degrees that morning and strong winds, they tried to save the house but just couldn't.
Over a week later a TV station did a story on the fire (first media that even reported there was a fire, the reporter saw a post on facebook on my daughters page) and it has went viral, all over the world. I don't know if this link will work, but here is the story.
https://www.grandforksherald.com/news/fires/6862840-10-year-old-girl-and-kitten-save-North-Dakota-family-from-burning-homeThat same morning 2 of our sons (twins) were trying to get back home from SD, a 5 hour drive, with a newly purchased used camper for their business (after 2 years of searching for the right one) and a high gust of wind caught the camper and threw it into the back of the 1 ton pick-up and rolled into the ditch, luckily the camper came off of the pick-up or it would have rolled with it. Most of ND is rural, they ended up having to sit at the accident site for 6 hours waiting for 2 big wreckers to come and flip the camper over and haul it away.
We definitely have guardian angels watching over our family!!
