I want to get into black and white photography, I know it is a big subject. I am putting this picture up to see what you all think.

Hi toptrainer, welcome to the Hog.

You might like to check out fellow UHH member Ian Barber, who is our "Zen Master" on B/W photography.
Check out his site at www.ianbarberphotography.co.uk
which is full of good tutorial advice on the art of B/W photography. Good luck.

Thanks to all the great information from the UHH community, my thoughts of just getting an SX50 HS was sidetracked. Reading everyones thoughts comparing the three camera's it came down to: SX50 HS, FZ70 and FZ200, the one thing the comments that hit home were the ones that suggested holding the cameras for comfort. I found the SX50 a bit small for my hand while the FZ200 seemed to have more space to grip..although it is a bit larger. OK. So I won't have a 1200mm zoom. I'll get closer to the subject--unless its the moon and that could be problematic. I'm not a bird watcher unless its in my backyard and I wont need 1200 for that! Grandkids, travel, family, usual stuff. Probably will experiment with landscapes or other things as I see fit. The good news is that the cot isn't breaking the bank and this will give me what I believe is a wonderful learning tool.
Anyway, thanks for all the reading pleasure. You folks know your stuff. I weighed things out as carefully as I could and pulled the trigger. Camera is coming next week so be ready to see some pretty awful stuff for critique. As a relative newbie to digital (I have vast experience with p&S and phones!) I'm looking forward to making myself a better photographer with the help of the UHH'ers.

Thanks for the information dundeelad. I would love to see the cathedral. We saw many castles and cathedrals during our visit and we thought they were all beautiful.
We were in Newcastle to see some of the remains of Hadrian's Wall.

You are most welcome KW.

Why would anyone go to Manchester, let alone North of it, you'll be suggesting we (gulp) visit Scotland next.

For a good audiovisual tour of England and Scotland, view the series on YouTube called "great British railway journeys, with Michael Portillo.' Its very entertaining.

I have loved geography ever since I was a child. In retirement, my wife and I have been doing a lot of traveling. We toured the British Isles and Ireland in August. Got to visit many English cities such as Chester, York, Bath, Newcastle, Stratford and of course London.
I think I have a pretty good handle on where the cities are now.

If you ever go again KW and you go near Newcastle, don't miss Durham. It's cathedral is magnificent. It rivals Lincoln cathedral and of course Westminster Abbey.

Well, I've heard of Yorkshire, but couldn't tell you where it is, either. So, I guess it works both ways.

Steve, as a native Yorkshire man, we used to call Yorkshire 'the Texas of England' because it is the largest county.

Stroudsburg, PA, where I taught for 28 years, is now little more than a bedroom community for eastern NJ and NYC. I had a girl in my 8th grade class that did not know there was a State of New York. She was from one of the boroughs and truly thought that NYC WAS New York. true story. So it easy for me to believe American students haven't a clue where THEY are, much less where the rest of the world is.

A large part of the problem, I think Amy, is that they stopped teaching Geography in schools, so some years ago when they did a test in New York, they asked students where Africa was and they placed it in Florida. Oohps.

What is the best add on flash for the Sony A350 camera. I have had it for quite a while and want to upgrade my photography.

Don, I bought two ad-on flashes for my A300 (exactly the same as the A350.)

The Minolta 5600 HS and the Minolta Maxuum 3500xi.
Both work perfectly with the A300 with full automation and even the wireless infrared trigger when off camera.
The 5600 HS is an exact duplicate of the Sony HVL58 and a great deal cheaper. I think I got my 5600 for about $100.

I bought both on the second hand market very cheaply versus the more expensive Sony flash units.

You might check these out.

Hi to you all, I have been asked to take some pictures of a Bonfire night at a local pub, purely on the grounds that the landlord had seen that I had a large camera and so took it upon himself that I knew what I was doing. I have explained to the guy that I am purely an amateur and that I will be there any way with my camera and that he is very welcome to any images that I take for his own use, but I would like to do well with this challenge purely for my own satisfaction. My question would be as follows; what ISO, what SS and what and where to meter from. I do like to shoot manual and RAW but what about the white balance, can that be set in camera or in post processing because I am shooting with the Nikon D 700 but I do not know which preset WB would be correct. I will be aiming to use my Speedlight Flash unit for fill flash pics of the crowd but not quite sure what the camera settings would be to achieve the overall correct exposure, or would Lightroom software be able to assist in this. So many questions, So keen to learn the art. Many thanks in advance for all your very much appreciated advice and I will be sure to post some pics to show my appreciation for your kind help. Keith

F1, I think what mogul has suggested makes a lot of sense.

As for Bonfire Night:-
Remember remember the 5th of November
Gunpowder Treason and Plot
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot."

For all our American friends. :-D :D

You probably already know this Bigal but they used the interior of Lincoln Cathedral in the filming of the Da Vinci Code , when Westminster Cathedral In London would not let them film the interior.

They re-built Sir Isaac Newton's tomb inside Lincoln Cathedral.

Your shots are great, by the way.

Do you honestly believe that Panasonic use genuine Leica lenses ? you only have to check how much a Leica lens costs for say an M4, to realise they cannot be the same quality, yes they are nice lenses, but do you see " made in Germany " anywhere on them, thought not!

Patcam. I have the Leica V lux 4 camera. It says on the nameplate "Leica Germany" and then underneath "Made in Japan."

I've been considering purchasing the Nikon 5300 with 85 mm macro lens primarily for photos of jewelry and weaving for posting on my small business' website. Getting true color for stones, metal & textile/fiber is important to me, and recently I've had to make do with my iPad (I know, I know- please!). Now I'm wondering if the new Leica V-lux could be a substitute. Certainly would save me some money, has great features, and a lot to offer for other uses. In my youth, I learned on my dad's Leica 35 mm, always loved it. Anyone have any experience with the V-lux for macro work?

Lily. I have the Leica V -lux 4 and it is a superb camera.
Like you, I love the little red dot. :-D

To check out it's macro work, check out Graham Houghton's videos on you tube on the Panasonic FZ200 camera, which is exactly the same as the V lux 4.

His series of videos is in 5 parts on the camera itself but he then does a video on it's macro work. I think you will find the camera quite astounding.
