I want to get into black and white photography, I know it is a big subject. I am putting this picture up to see what you all think.

Nice composition. The curtain on the arm seems to give it some motion as well.

Yes, a very nice composition. Good tones. I also love black and white and have had good luck with Nik Silver FX Pro software.

Taking off perhaps as much as third of the left side of the photo vertically. This would dampen all that while on the left side of the shot and cause it to become balanced and in my opinion,a more traditional portrait photo. Then if you wanted to you could use standard ratios for the size of the photo you would like to print.

I like this shot. The skin tones are excellent and as others have stated a different crop might make it even better.
